Senecas assert exclusive right to casinos in WNY

ALBANY -- Permitting new casinos in Western New York would put at risk thousands of jobs at the Seneca Nation's three gambling facilities and break a 2002 deal the tribe struck with New York for exclusive gambling rights in a large portion of the region, the tribe's leader said today.
"In our view, authorizing commercial casinos in Western New York would represent yet another injustice by the state to violate its written agreements with our Nation," Seneca Nation President Robert Odawi Porter told a State Senate panel this morning at a hearing in Canandaigua considering new efforts to add more gambling facilities across New York.

    I find this comment interesting.

So it's ok for the seneca's to put at risk 1000's of jobs of the businesses they compete with. Why is it ok for them to put jobs at risk of others but not the other way around?

Supposedly when they (NY) signed that deal, they said they'd never have any gambling places however , it's evident that "they lied". :-)

I believe the compact is up for renewal/negotiation in the next year or so, no? This is just theater...well all except for the part about their withholding funds. That is a lawsuit.

If I were a pol looking for a headline...I would say that I am not worried about the jobs being lost at the Seneca casino as there will be plenty of positions open at the new casinos that are going to get licensed.

Actually the agreement promised them no such exclusivity, it merely provided that the state will get a certain percentage on games that they do have exclusivity in offering and that if there were no exclusivity there would be no payments. Since the Senecas are not paying the State because they claim there is no exclusivity what is the difference.

Interesting take. Are you saying that if NYS were to allow 4 big casinos to be built in the Falls, the Seneca Casino would not have to pay a penny to the State for what they took in?

If this is the case, I bring back another suggestion for these landlocked casinos. Charge them for items like access to water, power, sewers, police, roads and the like. Charge them a similar amount of money that the State would take in on casino revenue. Problem solved.

Unless they figure out a way to fly everyone on via helicopter, collect enough rain water and build a power plant on site. Then again...they could just build a tire incineration plant on site.
