    Giambra won't delete vacant positions

Gotta go read this. My question is why keep unnecessary people. The term unnecessary means they are not needed. Do you want to pay for something you don't need. Perhaps we need a new county exec unless he can give a reason why we are keeping anyone that is deemed unnecessary?

The Democrats last Friday insisted the county is barreling toward a large year-end deficit, so they deleted 440 vacant jobs to ensure savings through 2005. The Democrats went beyond Giambra's request to merely lay off the approximately 1 percent of the work force whose jobs were deemed unnecessary.

The legislature has no authority to delete positions.

Why do they want to do it? It's MID-AUGUST! they want to tell thier constituants how much they saved them! Funny thing is, I don't think having X number of unfilled positions costs much of anything.

Giambra is not running this election cycle and he's not going to let the legislature perform some symbolic action that is the domain of the executive branch of government just so they can have something to run on.

Don't be suprised if he cuts those empty positions the day after the election.

    Those positions are budgeted

meaning, the money for each dept. is in place. If they do in fact eliminate those jobs, the money budgeted to finance them, is returned to the counties bank and Joel will claim an operating surplus. so to speak. The reason Giambra doens't want to eliminate them, is because he has control over who would get them, if he elected to fill them. They are taking patronage jobs from him. They stuck it to him politically by eliminating them. He will fight tooth and nail to block their move, because if they are eliminated, he will have to beg the county legislature to recreate those jobs. It is all about politics, nothing about the taxpayers of the County.
