It's so close, you can almost taste the burgers.
The 2007 Burgerfest is less than two weeks away from becoming a reality, and the excitement and anticipation for Hamburg's annual celebration of the birth of the burger continues to build throughout "the town that friendship built."
With a wide variety of family-oriented activities set to take place from noon until 11:30 p.m., it sounds like there will be something for everyone to enjoy at the 2007 Burgerfest on Saturday, July 21.
The complete event list and schedule of activities was released late last week, with Hamburg's party for the burger set to take place in the Village's of Hamburg's municipal parking lot and along Buffalo Street.
Despite having limited access to Main Street because of the ongoing reconstruction work along that roadway associated with the Route 62 road project, organizers are expecting thousands of people to attend the 2007 Burgerfest.
Hamburg will definitely be on a roll next weekend as a tantalizing sampling of the fare of a number of local restaurants will be featured as part of the "Taste of Hamburg," set to run from noon until 8:30 p.m.
Also scheduled are children's activities from noon until 6:30 p.m. in the municipal parking lot. Crafts, inflatable attractions, games and music will be available.
Also on the agenda are a variety of exhibits that will be set up along Buffalo Street from noon until 7 p.m.
An arts and crafts sale, and local businesses and community organizations will be among the highlighted stations on Buffalo between Main and Union streets.
The Burger Eating Contest will return for the seventh consecutive year, with members of the Hamburg Presbyterian Church sponsoring the event, which will feature burgers donated and cooked by Murphy's Main Street Station.
Also scheduled is "Animal Alley," featuring a variety of animal rescue groups, information and demonstrations. That will run from noon until 5 p.m. in the parking lot of HSBC Bank on Buffalo Street.
Live entertainment will also be featured throughout the day with performances running from noon until 11:30 p.m.
Music will be performed by Whiplash, Tom Stahl & The Dangerfields, The Keepers, The Leftovers, and Nik and the Niceguys.
Dennis George The Quizmaster will also entertain the crowd and Mike Margerum and "The Nickel City Road Show" will be back again for his normal assortment of games, dancing and trivia.
The Labatt Beer Tent will be open from 2 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. and will be conveniently located next to the live entertainment stage set up in the municipal parking lot.
The annual Burgerfest festival commemorates the birth of the hamburger, which reportedly took place in 1885 at the Hamburg Fairgrounds.
The Burgerfest was started in 1985 to mark the 100th anniversary of the creation of that very first hamburger.
Documentation shows that Frank and Charles Menches, food vendors from Ohio traveling the world's fair circuit, are credited for making their first burger here in Hamburg.
Legend has it that on a hot day at the Fair, the Menches brothers had a run their famous pork sandwiches out of the main ingredient.
A local butcher was also out of pork and suggested the Menches brothers substitute ground beef instead.
The inventive brothers, who also get credit for Cracker Jacks and ice cream cones, added secret ingredients, including coffee grounds, and with that, the first hamburger was sold, and born was America's favorite sandwich.
The 2007 edition of the BurgerFest will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Hamburg, the Hamburg Sunrise Rotary Club, the Hamburg Kiwanis Club and the Town of Hamburg Lions Club.
Sponsors of the event include Labatt Beer, First Niagara Bank, Key Bank, NEI Waste Services and Metro Group, Inc, owners of The Sun.
A complete preview of the 2007 Burgerfest, including specific times for all of the live musical entertainment and a detailed explanation of the rules of the Burger Eating Contest, will appear next week on Page 1 of the July 19, 2007 issue of The Sun.
