BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- The city of Buffalo is considering opening at gym at City Hall, where there's empty space following many
layoffs, in an effort to make those still on the public payroll healthier.

City Human Resources Commissioner Leonard Matarese says the costs could be absorbed by the city's health insurer. Even if Buffalo has to pay something for a fitness center, he says it's a good investment.

Matarese says the biggest challenge at City Hall would involve installing showers.

Thats why city officials are also exploring access to an off-site fitness center.
Didn't we just go thru this with the County last year?????

    I especially like the quote:

Hey Lenny, isn't the one thing we hear about from all layers of government "the rising costs of health insurance for our employees"?

All we ever hear about with government employees and union contracts is, "you have got give up something to get something, that's negotiation". So what are the employees going to give up to get a new BAC in their office? Next thing in the union contract you will see where city employees can get off work an hour early to go work out before they go home!!!!!

Alot of non-government health insurance companies cover gym memberships. Some as much as $250 a year toward it. I don't know what the City employees get. I would hate to see tax payers pay more than what their insurance already covers.

    Thumbs up Free

Just have City Hall employees walk up the stairs to the top floor during one of their two breaks or during their one-hour lunch break for exercise...believe me, walking up the stairs works great for cardio, muscle toning, weight loss, and it's free!

    Good point!
I can just picture city employees stopping at a vending machine or "snack cart" to load up on calories on their way to the elevator (bypassing the stairs) in the morning only to get out of work an hour early in the afternoon (with pay) to go to the gym and hang out talking to coworkers for an hour.

You know that is EXACTLY what is going to happen!

You also knows this means the city is going to have to hire a "Fitness Center Supervisor", "Deputy Supervisor", "Nutritionist", "Cardio Specialist", "Workout Instructor", "Equipment Maintenance Manager, "Equipment Maintenance Technician", etc, etc. All on the City payroll with a government pension, benefits and time off! They will have to pay for "Fitness Center" employees to be trained in E.M.T. and first-aid. They will have to be trained in using those paddles to start your heart. The purchasing department will have to pay someone to put all the equipment out to competitive bid. Patronage will become an issue (I wonder if that Buffalo Interiors place sells fitness equipment)? "Fitness Center" employees will be taking trips all over for "fitness and nutritional" seminars and conventions. We will need a "fact finding" tour around the country of department heads reviewing fitness centers to make sure the city "does this right"!

On and On and On and On!!!!!!!!!

Well I hope if they do it they also give us parking passes The police department already has a gym in HQ and each District house so I for one would not use the city hall one. Maybe the city will be willing to pay for my gym membership I currently have cause our insurance does not, just a thought.

"City Hall Health" . . .isn't that an oxymoron? Even it were true, it would be at the expense of the taxpayers' health.
