Bflo News Diversity reporting (& SUWNY?)

"Steven" reported this on his blog yesterday, but not on SU.

Perhaps SUWNY should also address its challenge to be more diverse & inclusive in being a tool for discourse in WNY.

Are there any blacks, Hispanics or gays (except 'fiona') who read or post on SU now that "Bringthetruth" & Marilyn Rodgers are gone, & Mike Miller has died?

    Get involved

    From the Buffalo News:

The Buffalo News is seeking candidates for a diversity advisory board to provide feedback on the paper’s coverage of minorities. The board will meet quarterly with News editors and reporters to discuss news coverage and offer ideas. Membership will be for one year.

Readers interested in serving should submit a one-to two-page letter briefly describing their background, their knowledge of the paper and how they believe they can help it improve its coverage.

Letters may be submitted in any of three ways: by mail to Rod Watson, The Buffalo News, One News Plaza, Buffalo, NY 14203; by e-mail to rwatson@buffnews.com ; or by fax at 856-5150, attn. Rod Watson.

We don't need any of that! /sarcasm

This board is full of thinly veiled racism, hatred, homophobia, and vitriol; why would they want to show up here, when there are much better alternatives to this forum out there?

Come On Kern.. Tony has gotten rid of alot of hard core bigots too.

There is ignorance within the blacks and hispanics communities too. Black discriminate within and so do hispanics.

It is changing and we both know it is not fast enough.

We all come from AFIKA and slowing whether the people like it or not their children are intermarring ( I hope it is spelled correctly)

That is why I can't stand people like Antoine Thompson and the black caucus. These guys work for us..

Why don't Watson look to help the Vets instead..

No one is prevented from joining here or posting..

Yes.. I know.. there are still bigots on this board but their families might be surprised with their grandchildren when they come home a little darker or with slanted eyes....

In the military, I had a mexican friend that looked indian, a dominican who was part chinese and spoke french, a cuban that looked like a spanard, a guy from Peru that was japanese descent , a puerto rican that looked african.

There were many immigrants that were not citizens too that served our country.. Then there was a guy who was allowed to wear a turban in uniform (not hispanic).. This is during the Vietnam conflict..I can go on and on..

    And I resemble Carl Paladino!

During my visit to Bflo in early Sept several folks came up & said, "I'm voting for you!"

A friend explained my resemblence to Paladino was the bags under my eyes!

I guess that makes me 'diverse' too?!

Thanks, but we've included plenty of tools on this board already.

Speakup is a script that runs on a server. Nothing more. No guidance other than baby sitting if people get disruptive or bothersome. I don't stop anyone from posting unless they are are vulgar or just here to waste others time to be disruptive for the most part. Some of the disruption happened because I didn't realize that some people are just pieces of crap and/or lie with out any regards to the harm it can cause/did.

Then don't let the door hit you on the ass and go away. If you are just here to go in circles to jerk people's chains until you get to do your "I stand corrected" again go do it somewhere else.

What other side? The people who mock other people's beliefs? The religion haters? The anti-christian bigots? The best, stieny, the anti-"straight white guy with a job" bigot. They can hang with the anti-"fill in the blank" bigots of any other topic. A bigot is a bigot. Most bigots fail to see their own bigotry while pointing out others.

What terrible news for fans of a free press.

What ever happened to the simple truth in coverage?

As if the Buffalo News' PC mentality wasn't bad enough already...

Now we'll have a group of people headed by Rod "everything is always about race all the time because I'm a professional victim" Watson influencing what is reported and how it's written...

For the umpteenth time, this is my problem with Mr. Kern. He lays out the problems in Buffalo (that sometimes only he can see) from Minnesota, and then demands that WE fix it. No suggestions, no plans. Just marching orders.

I wish we'd get rid of the whiners who cry bigotry over everything as well...

To comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable?

Once again a serious issue has gotten virtually no serious discussion, quickly deteriorating into nonsense.

It appears than in a city with many too "afflicted", SU is dominated by the 'comfortable'.

I have often suggested that in order for SU to progress toward its powerful potential to inform & reform & its stated goals of "to make Buffalo a better place" . . & "be civil" . . there needs to be greater accountability that posters share that goal.

Instead anybody wearing a 'mask' & claiming silly 'name' becomes a "gold member".

History has shown that those wearing masks too often become a lynching mob . . . as demonstrated by the last several comments above.
