The old car/pedestrian ferry between Stowe and Bemus Point on Chautauqua Lake is now in operation for the 2007 season! The ferry runs Friday pm through Sunday. It's manned by volunteers and riders are asked to donate to cover the cost of fuel, maintenance, and insurance.
Before the building of the I-86 bridge over Chautauqua Lake in the 1980s, the ferry was the only public means to get between the two villages. It's a great way to get "on the water". Visit Chautauqua Institute, Panama Rocks or historic Westfield, take the ferry from Stowe to Bemus, and have dinner at the Village Casino right next to the ferry landing.
The Chautauqua Lake area has a variety of attractions. Bring your kids or grandkids to New York's newest state park, Midway, with it's waterside amusement park (aimed at little kids) and picnic area. Long Point SP offers boat launching as well as swimming, picnicking and hiking. The Summer Wind out of Celoron offers a variety of cruises. Jamestown has a variety of museums, including the Lucy-Desi Museum, the Fenton History Museum, and the Robert Tory Peterson Institute.
