    Bass Pro deal coming together

The deal to bring the oft-discussed Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World to Buffalo's waterfront is poised to come together Friday morning.

The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp.'s directors will gather for a special meeting at HSBC Arena -- the first time they have formally met since December and also the first meeting under the tutelage of Gov. Eliot Spitzer and his new economic development team. The session has been called to approve what is described as a "pre-development agreement."

The pact is akin to a formal development agreement with the only hurdle to be cleared a standard environmental review of the proposed site of the store. The location is the former Central Wharf site, just south of Memorial Auditorium and overlooking the Erie Canal terminus.

Sources said construction could start by next spring on the 150,000-square-foot store that will be designed with a late-1800s motif that ties in with the history of the Erie Canal. The store is projected to open by the summer of 2009.

Harbor District Associates LLC, an affiliate of Buffalo-founded Benderson Development Co., will serve as the project's developer. Benderson, in December, was named the designated developer for the retail component of inner harbor area that the corporation is overseeing.

Friday's agreement is viewed as a binding pact. Bass Pro is slated to receive some $25 million in state and local incentives. In return, Bass Pro has agreed to pay $300,000 annually to help other efforts under the harbor development corporation's domain.

Buffalo is slated to receive $10 million -- roughly half of the estimated demolition costs for the Aud. The rest is expected to come from federal sources.

Since this isn't going to be the great tourist mecca as the original, do they still get all the big public $$$?

article states BP will receive $25 million for construction. Bass Pro will pay $300,000 per year towards Harbor development.

I don't think they stated how much BP is spending on initial development...

We'll find out more tomorrow I guess.

probably till they go out of business in a couple years.

$25 million for basspro? if it is a profitable business, why do they need the aid? didn't they build one in pittsburgh without asking for any "incentives"?
One beautiful thing about having a government of the corporations, by the corporations, and for the corporations is that every disaster is measured in terms of economic loss. It's sort of like getting your arm sheared off in a car accident and thinking, "Damn, now it'll take longer to fold the laundry" as blood spurts from your arteries. - The Rude Pundit

    Nope

"Pennsylvania came up with millions in incentives to get Cabela's to Hamburg and a Bass Pro that's planned for Harrisburg. It's likely to take more than of $20 million to get a Bass Pro for Washington County."

BTW....who eats anything out of that bacteria bowl commonly referred to as "Lake Erie"?

They close the beaches almost every summer for awhile because of combined/sanitary sewer overflows which causes high bacteria levels making it unsafe to swim in.

We already have enough tackle shops in WNY. Hell, Kmart has great stuff as well. Mobil Gas Stations sell bait for crying out loud.

This store will go under with-in a couple of years.
