Does Buffalo need a Center for Arts & Media? Should we build one?

Does Buffalo need a Center for Arts & Media? Should we build one?

"One idea that gained quick consensus among those in the room was establishment of a local film arts center to act as a physical venue for what is by nature an individual and fragmented industry. BuffaloNews"

The Buffalo Film Commission has said for a long time that we could create alot of jobs and bring alot of industry to our city if we had a Pre/Post Production Facility for Film, TV and other media.

This suggestion is that we can take this another step further by creating a Center for local film arts and media....bringing together a consortium of theater, music, tv, film and new venues such as documentaries, special effects and animation......even publishing and print

Yes this is an investment I would suppport with our tax dolllars just as I would support a new Convention and Conference Center.

We will never know if we need or want it if we continue to let the government spend our money on things like that. The decision will be made by people out of town, spending our money with no frame of reference and they will probably never visit themselves. The true value of cultural things can not be determined unless we are allowed to keep our own money and support the causes we deem worthy.

Delaware there is a difference between expense and investment

Delaware there is a difference between expense and investment

Cities that have the best job creation records are ones that have properly focused on infrastructure seed money that attracted companies and industries from outside the area....

There would be no Buffalo without the Erie Canal....and that was a state investment....so would an arts center and a convention center. Both of which Buffalo deserves

Your position is based on the faulty premise that government always knows best when it comes to art & culture and how our dollars should support it.

You can not determine the value of a cultural asset when the money to support it is forcibly taken from the people. Things gain value by virtue of free demand and support. I am not saying the Arts & Media Center is necessarily bad, only that government support often leads to wasteful spending.

The analogy with the Erie Canal is a bit of a stretch. Infrastructure expenditures can more easily be justified by the General Welfare clause of the constitution. Cultural ventures can not.

If the government would just refrain from funding ventures and programs people would have enough discretionary income to determine what is desirable and support those causes voluntarily.

I think the conflict is that your thinking aCulturalArtsCenter is about culture & Art

If you read the Buffalo News article, the Buffalo Film Commission met with other Buffalo Culturals (art, music, theater, etc) and representatives from NYC and LA as to how we can attract more film and tv development to Buffalo. Their response was a Cultural Arts Center...kind of a one stop shop for local talent (Im guessing because the article didnt say) and a Cultural Arts Center could include facilities for Pre/Post production editing, computers for animation & special effects, etc.

Your thinking Im advocating public money be used for a new theater of some sort....and in reality Im not. The Buffalo News article was about how to attract and grow an industry to Buffalo and WNY.

Delaware Im reminding you that the main business in LA is related to film and tv production.....NYC has the next largest media production...and lets remember the significant media production in Toronto and Vancouver. Buffalo and Niagara Falls have the potential to significantly increase this industries presence in Buffalo and the jobs associated with it.

Handouts are expenses in my opinion..and that there is some agreement

Seed money to build the foundation for more jobs...thats something I think we can and should all support.

If we can support municipal housing for a city with a declining population, 25% of urban homes abandoned or foreclosed and where it actually costs more for municipal housing than local rents, then we can support seed money to attract jobs.

sniff sniff... I smell another silver bullet..

    I know how about a monorail... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marge_vs._the_Monorail

Ya that's the ticket. A monorail to tie the Airport to the Casino to the bass pro shop. Maybe add a stop by the canal and those cement grain silos..

Anything that could be a benefit to Buffalo I would encourage supporting, but not with Tax dollars.

When tax money is spent, there is little accountability and it has a tendancy for waste. If the idea is worth supporting than build it the good old fashion way.... through private enterprise. If people find the project worthwhile they will come.

That goes for sport teams too and NPR.
