Council seeks guarantees on benefits of Canal Side

The Common Council wants guarantees that the $294.8 million Canal Side project will produce specific community benefits before the city transfers more land for the development.

Tuesday's unanimous vote calling for such assurances occurred shortly after advocacy groups held a news conference outside City Hall to push for a Community Benefits Agreement. Supporters justified their stand by noting that more than half of the project is being financed with public funds.

    $294.8 million

So 150 million is tax payer money? Is this the infrastructure cost for them to build? Roads, drainage, city lighting etc?

The pact also would set local and minority hiring goals for temporary and permanent jobs, require builders to use environmentally friendly "green" technology and include affordable housing.
Why would you put housing where you can charge PRIME for a successful business that wants to be located there? We have so much housing stock as it is in Buffalo why add any housing to this project? use the old shells in the city instead of building new crap. Wouldn't that make sense?

    That amount might include studies.
Plus they have to build all the canals.

Where did you get the $150 million figure? Why isn't the entire $294.8 considered all taxpayer? Where is the breakdown?

The entire project is not publicly funded. Benderson is paying for their development (or whichever developer ends up building..) Bass Pro is also funding a large chunk of the Bass Pro store (assuming Bass Pro is still onboard).

Forget bass pro ever been to the one in auburn lately? Dead nobody there. Maybe on weekends. Since these guys are taking forever how about Cabela's? I have been to a few of them they are much nicer.By the way Benderson shouldn't be allowed to build anything until they fill up all that vacant property all over WNY.This is just my opinion.
