All 72 Tops stores going on the auction block

Top's was unsuccesful in selling their Tops and Martins store in
WNY, They couldn't find anyone who wanted to buy them, so now, after
the first of the year, All 72 WNY area Tops and Martin stores are going on the auction block.
Their was a meeting yesterday between Tops management, employees and
the unions. Top's warned their employee's that who ever buys a store or stores might not keep them supermarkets. The Union said they don't want what happen in Syracuse to happen here. (Only some stores were sold and the ones that weren't sold are being closed. Tops has 10,500
employees and familys in WNY, who are worried who's going to buy them
Top's is WNY's largest private sector employer. Union leaders also stated that they would prefer one owner buy all the stores

Interesting that this may just turn into a Real Estate deal. Says a lot for Wegmans.

Why can't Top's get a subsidy from the State of New York to make the sale easier.? Seems like everyone (Bass Pro, etc) in this area is getting a subsidy to operate in this area.

    What a depressing pattern here.

    Same with the hospitals.

Most of the discussion is about the jobs being lost. Nothing about whether the capacity is needed or not, and if it isn't that it's just a waste of money to keep it going.

If absolutely no one wants to buy any of the Tops locations, they must be absolutely unnecessary. And the people working there should move on to something that adds to economic value.

Maybe Tokascz can call a press conference and say something as vacuous about the impending Tops dissolution as he did about the hospitals.

"Unsuccessful"? "They couldn't find anyone to buy..."? It's been only THREE WEEKS since they announced that the stores were available. Calm down. Big business deals take longer than 3 weeks.

Also, the stores are NOT 'going on the auction block", as if it's some kind of fire sale. There are at least 2 interested buyers, and Royal Ahold 'says that it expects formal bidding to begin after January 1.' That means they will be considering offers, not dumping the stores in a panic.

    My Friend
Price Choppers (a step up from Aldi's & Save A Lot etc.. but a step below Top's) were going to buy a few Tops stores (10 or 15) but since Price Choppers is non Union, Top's two Unions vowed to block the sale !
They were already starting a series's of law suits to delay or stop the sales
The Union is demanding that who ever buys them has to be union and has to buy and keep all 72 stores open. Good Luck !

Maybe the unions can do for Tops what they were successful in doing to the Courier-Express.

This is the Union Mentality! It’s all or none. In the 90s some company wanted to open a Mini Steel Mill in New Bagdad, I mean Lackawana; he was going to employ 150 people. The Steel workers reply was hire all or no deal. That mill is now in Indiana doing just fine. Where do the employees get off telling the owner of the company who and when he can sell. Wegmans seems to do alright with out no stinkin Union.

It seems to me that we are going to have to wait three generations for the people of this area to "get real" about how to attract business here.

The current generation of unionites will have to die off.

Their sons and daughters are moving away in droves. So we won't have that generation to build around.

The next generation---which will be much smaller (do the demographic math)---will be the first to have a realistic prospect for realigning the area's economic structures.

Between now and then, a lot of downsizing of everything. U/B or Buff State, but not both. Drastic reductions in all levels of local government, unless NYS will subsidize them to the tune of the Buffalo School District (i.e., 91%). Out of Daemen, Hilbert, Medaille, et al, only two will survive.

Prepare for a much smaller WNY. But one that works with its head, not its hands.

I agree 100% .The sad part is,We created the mess we are in becuase of the poor choices we made in the voting booth. No matter who we elect the government wins. It used to be if you wanted to see a hooker you looked on Chipewa Street. Now look in the county legislature. They will screw you for nothing and love it.Right Lynn,Maria,Kathy and the rest of the clowns.
