NF hospital fined for asbestos

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center faces $110,000 in fines for alleged improper asbestos removal during a December renovation project.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the hospital for possible lack of employee safeguards and the improver removal and disposal of asbestos-containing material.

The medical center issued a prepared release that indicated officials cooperated with OSHA inspectors and began making corrections as they were suggested by the agency. All corrections were completed during the course of OSHA's inspection, according to the release.

An OSHA inspection, prompted by an employee complaint, found several potential hazards including employees removed the material without proper protective clothing, respirators and training; the material was not properly disposed and the work area was not monitored for asbestos levels.
