Gore Vidal called him the "Sage of Batavia"--I'm pleased to announce that author Bill Kauffman will read from his new book, Come Homeward America, at the Taste of Freedom on June 3rd.

Book Description from Amazon--

In Look Homeward, America, Bill Kauffman introduces us to the reactionary radicals, front-porch anarchists, and traditionalist rebels who give American culture and politics its pith, vim, and life. Blending history, memoir, digressive literariness, and polemic, Kauffman provides fresh portaiture of such American originals as Catholic Worker founder Dorothy Day, regionalist painter Grant Wood, farmer-writer Wendell Berry, publisher Henry Regnery, maverick U.S. senators Eugene McCarthy and Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and other Americans who can’t—or shouldn’t—be filed away in the usual boxes labeled “liberal” and “conservative.” Ranging from Millard Fillmore to Easy Rider, from Robert Frost to Mother Jones, Kauffman limns an alternative America that draws its breath from local cultures, traditional liberties, small-scale institutions, and neighborliness. There is an America left that is worth saving: these are its paragons, its poets, its pantheon.

Hey Jim, Parallel Universe here--

I Googled Bill and he seems like an interesting guy. I see he published a book "Country Towns of New York" and is quite knowledgeable about the history of Upstate New York.

Thanks Parallel. In Free Buffalo's Reading Room, our budding small library, we have his previous book, Dispatches from the Muckdog Gazette. Feel free to stop in and check it out.

I read City..., by Goldman, and would buy the new book, Power Failure, but hefty price right now. The author, Dillaway, is having a book signing at Barnes and Noble on NFB, sometime in the next 2 weeks.

I have to say, June 3rd at FB's sounds interesting.

I invited Dillaway to come by the way. I was told she would not be in town, but I'll double check.

I also invited Robert Swados who wrote a book about the Sabres. I'm waiting on that one.

They are in the big leagues now with their first-time nomination of a major party candidate for Governor, Bill Weld. We've invited a representative of Weld's campaign to speak on his behalf.
