"The closest vote in Erie County was in Grand Island, where a last-minute postcard campaign against the budget was countered by an army of parent-generated "Vote Yes" lawn signs and a flurry of fliers, all resulting in the biggest turnout in the district's history - and a very close tally, by a vote of 2,065 to 1,999.
School Board President Michael Dallessandro said he was relieved there was no replay of last year's budget defeat, but his optimism was tempered.
"So again, we had no real clear direction based on the vote," he said. "It is good that it passed - it will stop further cuts in programs and things like that. But it was no strong endorsement from the community. The board still has to work very hard to rebuild the support."
