It's a bit more sobering now.

But yes other groups around the word still do things to people that we couldn't even imagine. That doesn't mean it's a road we should start heading down. We're supposed to be the shining light on the hill, and that noble image has been damaged.

The Bush administration Monday formally renounced its obligations as a signatory to the 1998 Rome Statute to establish an International Criminal Court (ICC). Critics say the decision to "unsign" the treaty will further damage the United States' reputation and isolate it from its allies.

"Driven by unfounded fears of phantom prosecutions, the United States has hit a new nadir of isolationism and exceptionalism," said William Schulz, executive director of Amnesty International's U.S. section (AIUSA).

A simple three-sentence letter to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan formally ended U.S. participation in an agreement to create the world's first permanent tribunal to prosecute war crimes, genocide, and other crimes against humanity. In the letter, Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, John Bolton, asserted that Washington "does not intend to become a party to the (Rome Statute of the ICC)" and that it "has no legal obligations arising from its signature (to the treaty) on December 31, 2000."

"Other countries might well use this precedent to justify backing out of international commitments that are important to the U.S.," noted Michael Posner, director of the New York-based Lawyers Committee on Human Rights.

How can we "justfy" policing the world while simultaneously withdrawing from the same treaties we use to judge and invade other nations? How can we judge others by a treaty we withdrew from? Withdrawing from this treaty does far more damage then obiding by it.

Not only does this withdrawal admit "guilt" to torture, and at the very least the intent of using banned weapons, its another showing that Bush doesn't care for freedom or peace anywhere.
Rumsfeld's signature is on documents telling troops how to torture people.

How long will the rest of the world let us get away with this rubbish?

After 9/11 virtually the whole world lined up on the side of the U.S. in an outpouring of sympathy that I will probably never see again in my life time.

Yet today we see this country being labled as Nazi. WBFO, Public TV of all things, aired a show on Nazi germany and the christian collusion with Hitler. Then discussion of US christian leaders and their ties to the present administration. Quite impressive yet no more surprising then any special interest group tied to politics.The Dems have their groups and the republicans have theirs. Quess what they don't like each other right now? Big deal! The War is in order. The economy is on the rise and well, let's not talk how wonderful the unemployment rate is.
With this type of demonization this administration and the christian right as NAZI tortore freaks. Kerry stating that American soldiers and marines where terorizing women and children in the night. As if it was part and parcel to the war tactics. BS!

No you may not have said purposefully. That is the general impression of the torture aurgument today. That Bush allows torture just like Al Quida. It has even been stated on many websites and Lib. Media stations.
My statement is to make it clear that showing the true works of torture by the enemy the inane claims of torture, by the US, are just that. Inane

The problem we, the US, have with a blanket denial of torture is the lack of definition. The definition of torture that laid waste to Abu Grab (sp) was no more than over zealous collage pranks. I frankly felt they did the appropriate thing to divulge information. Embarassment is not torture. Nor is sleep deprivation or loud music.
I suppose none of you where ever teenagers. Remember not sleeping and listening to loud music.
So for the leadership not signing off on the no torture aurgument is the right move. Until a complete definition of torture is written by congress. The broad brush stroke they have proposed is wrong.

Hypothetical question:



What if the USA had in its custody, a known terrorist that the Government knew beyond a shadow of a doubt and with absolute certainty had the information that could have prevented the 9-11 disaster. Furthermore, what if the terrorists were already in the air and that the terrorist in US custody could tell them which planes they were on, but refused to say which ones because that terrorist knew that the US officials do not use "torture" as a means to get information out of people.

What do you do?

A. Do nothing

B. Try to reason with the terrorist, politely, of course.

C: Use whatever means necessary to get the terrorist to talk.
