America's trade deficit with Canada has grown by another $8.1 billion, based on new figures from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Canada ran up the second-largest trade imbalance with the United States in October. The only gap that was larger was $20.5 billion for American trade with China.

Canada historically runs third on the monthly list of imbalances, trailing both China and Japan. But it passed up the latter in October, in which the U.S. trade gap with Japan was $7.4 billion.

The U.S.-Canadian trade figures are watched closely in Western New York, since Canada is by far the region's largest international customer.

Figures for October show the United States exporting $18.8 billion of goods to Canada, but importing $26.9 billion from that country, yielding a deficit of $8.1 billion for the month.

America's year-to-date trade deficit with Canada, covering the first 10 months of 2005, is $60.7 billion.
