View Full Version : What would a libertarian supreme court justice look like?

"Below are my prepared remarks as a panelist at a University at Buffalo Law School Federalist Society program on the recent Supreme Court nominations. I spoke last after a very liberal law professor and a conservative constitutional law professor. In her remarks, the liberal professor had summed up her position: "We believe in the federal government." I responded, speaking for many or most libertarians: "We don’t." I reminded the probably left-wing audience that it is the liberals’ beloved federal government that is fighting the war they oppose in Iraq. I asked, while liberals say that when states violate rights, the federal government should step in, where do we go when the federal government violates our rights, the United Nations? I never got a response, nor did I get a response the last time I asked that question."

What would a libertarian supreme court justice look like?
He would have a long ponytail that would hang past his shoulders and get lost in his robes. He would show up in court in dirty torn jeans with a smoking joint hanging out of his mouth. He would call defendants "dude"........
Oppps thats not what you meant.
sorry J.O. couldnt resist

You know Steven, that would be vastly superior to what we have in the Supreme Court now.
I think the majority of the current Supreme Court Justices are ex-hippies suffering from LSD flashbacks and hallucinations, because they seem to see things in the U.S. Constitution that aren't really there.

Don't wear the brown robe!
The same guys who sang along to Arlo Guthrie's "Coming into Los Angeles" at Woodstock '69 are now upholding TSA laws. Could we ever feel much finer?
Don't touch my bags, if you please, mr. customs man.

Honestly though Jim I really don't think libertarian would be any different from the middle of the pack/moderates we already have. I am not big on SC knowledge but I am aware from accounts I have seen most thought to be raging liberals didn't turn out to be as liberal as everyone thought and the same for conservatives. I no there are those that are but I am just speaking generally. As I said my knowledge on the subject is limited.
I rarely get involved in the sc nominee debates because who can really know another's mind? When all is said and done when vying for office etc people say and do things they really don't believe in whole heartedly but once appointed to the highest court in the land I would guess they really vote there conscious.
What a sobering thought that must be to be a member of the supreme court.

The bottom line is, you don't get on the court unless they know you will not upset the applecart. And they never do.
