Issuing parking tickets will drive people away

9/11/2003

Who came up with the brilliant plan of solving the city's financial situation through increased parking enforcement? Such actions exhaust the patience of those already here, and reinforce in outsiders their belief that this is not a place to be. I live and work in Buffalo. I pay for a parking space two blocks from my office. Last week, while unloading office supplies, I got a ticket. I had put a quarter in the meter, but the trips in and out took 16 minutes instead of 15.
The next day, on the same street, I noticed a row of cars trimmed with the infamous orange leaflet. I looked past the cars and saw funeral mourners exiting a church. Within minutes, people were at their cars, holding tickets and shaking their heads. "We have been at a funeral! How can they do this?" one woman exclaimed. "The church lot was full and I misjudged how long the service would be."

There are people who want to live, work and play in this city. This new plan of attack on anyone who sets foot or tire within Buffalo's borders is moronic. We can only accomplish strong schools and adequately paid law enforcement if we consolidate with surrounding communities.

The benefit to all is that people can live where they want, and still be able to point proudly to an anchor point and say, "And of course, there is the city." Otherwise, we will continue to have Erie County residents who answer "Amherst" instead of "Buffalo" when asked where they are from. The people who live in this area should never be embarrassed. Harassing the taxpaying base is poor form.

Law enforcement activity should be for protecting the public, not for "revenue generation". To do so is to squander the integrity of law enforcement. What a foolish idea.
