Steuben Foods Inc. has decided to expand its Elma warehouse, a move that will double its local storage and distribution space.

While company officials are mum about the project, construction industry sources indicate that Steuben will invest $2 million in the project and may add a handful of workers at the Elma facility.

Steuben has held preliminary talks with the Erie County Industrial Development Agency and the Empire State Development Corp. about the project. Those talks have centered on incentives that might be available to help finance the expansion.

The company has retained the East Aurora-based firm of Fontanese Folts Aubrecht Ernst Bammel Architects to design the expanded warehouse and Savarino Construction Services Corp. to serve as general contractor.

The warehouse will handle the company's dry goods products.

The proposed expansion in the first major addition to Steuben's Elma operations in the past decade. Construction is expected to start later this fall.
