So, anyone else out there most unhappy to learn that the guy who will be our next member of the Supreme Court wondered -- in writing no less! -- whether our homemaking females should be encouraged to get out of the kitchen and have careers?
I always suspected he was more conservative than conservatives let on -- but I didn't realize the guy is a:
A knuckle scrapper
A huge sexist.... and many other descriptions my upbringing will not allow me to utter....

Here's the story, in the Aug. 19 editions of The News:
Reagan-era documents show reluctance on women's rights, support for ID card
By DAVID ESPO
Associated Press
8/19/2005
WASHINGTON - Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. disparaged state efforts to combat discrimination against women and wondered whether "encouraging homemakers to become lawyers contributes to the common good," according to Reagan-era documents that were made public Thursday.
As a White House lawyer, Roberts also expressed support for a national identification card in 1983, saying that it would help counter the "real threat to our social fabric posed by uncontrolled immigration."
In words that may resurface next month at his Senate confirmation hearings, he criticized a crime-fighting proposal by Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., as "the epitome of the "throw money at the problem' approach."
Specter, then a first-term senator, is now chairman of the Judiciary Committee and will preside at Roberts' hearings.
The documents, released both in Washington and at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., completed the disclosure of more than 50,000 pages that cover Roberts' tenure as a lawyer in the White House counsel's office from 1982 to 1986.
Taken as a whole, the material released Thursday reinforced the well-established image of Roberts as a young lawyer whose views on abortion, affirmative action, school prayer and other issues were in harmony with the conservative president he served.
In one memo, Roberts reviewed a report that summarized state efforts to combat discrimination against women. "Many of the reported proposals and efforts are themselves highly objectionable," he wrote to Fred F. Fielding, Reagan's White House counsel.
As an example, he said a California program "points to passage of a law requiring the order of layoffs to reflect affirmative action programs and not merely seniority" - a position at odds with Reagan administration policy.
He referred to a "staggeringly pernicious law codifying the anti-capitalist notion of "comparable worth,' (as opposed to market value) pay scales."
Advocates of comparable worth argued that women were victims of discrimination because they were paid less than men working in jobs that the state had decided were worth the same.
In a third case, Roberts said a Florida measure "cites a (presumably unconstitutional) proposal to charge women less tuition at state schools, because they have less earning potential."
In a memo dated Sept. 26, 1983, Roberts cited the Reagan administration's objections to a proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution.
"Any amendment would . . . override the prerogatives of the states and vest the federal judiciary with broader powers in this area, two of the central objections to the ERA," he wrote.
His remark about homemakers and lawyers was in a one-page memo about the Clairol Rising Star Awards and Scholarship Program, designed to honor women who made changes in their lives after age 30 and had made contributions in their new fields.
A Reagan administration official nominated an aide who had been a teacher but then became a lawyer. Roberts signed off on the nomination, then wrote: "Some might question whether encouraging homemakers to become lawyers contributes to the common good, but I suppose that is for the judges to decide."
Also, Roberts struggled to define the line that Reagan and other officials should not cross in encouraging private help to the forces opposing the leftist Sandinista government of Nicaragua.
A memo dated Jan. 21, 1986, said that there was no legal problem with Reagan holding a White House briefing for two groups trying to raise funds. A month later, Roberts warned against getting too close to such groups, toning down letters of commendation drafted for Reagan's signature.
On immigration, he wrote to Fielding in October 1983 that he did not share his opposition to a national ID card.

I'm very confused.
What does Clinton's private sex life have to do with Roberts not wanting homemakers to have jobs outside the home?
Clinton has nothing to do with this issue -- except, it appears, to serve as some kind of dodge for you.
How about we have a thread that doesn't boil all issues down to Clinton's penis???

The problem with Clinton is that he thought with his penis.
And eventually it caught up with him. My only wish is that he wasn't president when he got caught.
As far as Roberts is concerned, the article is a desperation gasp to find something, anything on this man.
And they cant.
But I do enjoy watching the libs try. Ifind it very humorous.

I guess JB isn't going to respond to your question, so I'll give it a try.
I posted a story about the Supreme Court nominee John Roberts expressing doubts about whether homemakers should be encouraged to have careers outside of the home.
For some reason, JB thought it was hypocritical for me to be unhappy with Roberts' attitude because of Bill Clinton's affairs with other women.
I never did see the connection, and JB never explained it.

Since when did being a MOTHER become an unsatisfying waste of time!
We are not even having enough children to replace our population in the US. All our population increase has come from immigration.
Since when does a woman have to be a lawyer to be fulfilled!
I think its absolutely ridiculous that our children are growing up alone, latch key kids, susceptable to all sorts of unsupervised behavior...while feminists chase after a 50 / 50 deal....in corporate america.
Well guess what....its not your legs and arms getting shot off in Iraq....its not your ass defending our country! So please dont pretend that women are carrying 50% of the responsibilities of this nation!
When you have sex and bring a life into this world....you should have a discussion with your spouse over how that child should be cared for....AND NO YOU CANT HAVE IT ALL! YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO HAVE A FAST TRACK CAREER INTO THE TOP LEVELS OF CORPORATE AND GOVERNMENT AND PROFESSIONAL AMERICA AND RAISE KIDS AT THE SAME TIME.
SHOW ME PARENTS THAT VALUE THEIR CHILDREN MORE THAN THEIR JOB....AND I WILL SHOW YOU A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR THIS COUNTRY THAN YET ANOTHER LAWYER!

Women are perfectly welcome to have careers and be mothers
but lets not fool ourselves into believing that its not the children that are being sacrificed by two career driven parents working 40+ (45-50-55-60) hour work weeks
but lets not fool ourselves into believing that because women are 50% of the population ....50% of women should be represented in all career fields or its discrimination. As far as I can tell theres no cry of discrimination that our military isnt comprised of 50% women.
but lets not fool ourselves into believing in gender equality, the last time i men are not equal partners in reproductive rights. Men have no reproductive rights to notification of pregancy, abortion, adoption or birth even when engaging in consensual sex. The only way a father knows is if the mother wants child support.
and lets not forget that most of the whiney feminists are anti-male, lesbians, and anti-US! Their looking to use feminism to get the best deal that victimization can offer while remaining silent on the equal responsibilities that accompany the rights their demanding.
Just look for a sign saying down with the US and its going to be held by a feminist!

I have no doubt that you enjoy sports....at the expense of boys because of Title IX

I have no doubt that you put in a 40 hour workweek and make the same amount of money as your male counterparts who work longer hours and travel more. Yeah, thats fair!
-all the special attention that is given to girls because they lag in math and science (while boys who are bad at reading and writing are ignored)
-all the women mentors and women's clubs encouraging women to go to college (while boys clubs are integrated and forced to include women, male mentors are subjected to scrutiny as pedophiles or abusers or denied their fathers so mothers could get sole custody, max child support, etc. Oh and lets not forget the women who serially divorce their husbands so they can move up the income scale and get the house, car, swimming pool and vacations)
You see some men may divorce for younger women....but most men actually divorce because overly manipulative controlling women who dont share or respect men as equals.
You see most women dont divorce for younger men but divorce for men who make more money and power. Its so abhorant for a man to divorce a woman for another younger woman....but hey its empowerment for a woman divorce for a better paying more powerful man right! And if a woman wants a younger man...hey thats empowerment too! Right!

I have no doubt that you have a well paying career considering:
-you no doubt got your well paying career from a company that was afraid of a discrimination lawsuit because they werent adequately diversified.
Right!
Feminism is the destroyer of men, of american families and of the unborn, as well as, feminists deep seated hatred for this country and its values!
This post deserves an encore. It just screams clarity.:)

oh please give me a break....listen to what your saying
you have no comments other than to create crazy theory to explain what you dont want to comment on.
Fine!
-when your son dies in Iraq while your daughter goes to college,
-when your daughter gets special help in math & science because women are under-represented in those fields while your son thinks he's stupid and hates school because he isnt getting the remedial help he needs in reading and writing,
-when a woman falsely accuses you of abuse so she can get sole custody, dictate the terms of your visitation and marry a wealthier husband (making you a disposable father in your own sons life) or falsely accuses you of harrassment so she doesnt have to travel for work
-when a women who works less hours, travels less and handles less complex assignment gets a raise and a promotion because the company needs to protect itself from a lawsuit....
-when your son cant get into college because of gender quotas(now that women comprise over 50% of the college population and the men going to college is steadily dropping...what will feminists say about affirmative action to admit men to college)
-when your son cant play sports because of Title IX and get a scholarship
(ive witnessed all of them...while not personally experienced all of them)
When these things happen to you or your son, perhaps thats what it will take to see just how feminism is destroying the fabric of our country. Dare I say it? Who exactly started the womens movement and the whole empowerment through victimization? Betty Freidan....what religion was Betty Freidan?

My mistake. I should have put a :) after that. It was a joke.
I assumed it was a joke on your part too.
