Is having a big kitchen important to you?

I wish I had a larger kitchen for the major food prep I do on occaision. However, the one I have now is adequate, especially for me and future empty-nesters or a young couple.

I's interesting to pbserve that many TV shows advertise HUGE kitchens. It's like a working room. Do women need them? I wish people spent more time socializing, instead of cooking and cleaning. Besides, with the apliences fasion they can never keep up their kitchens up to date. Is it important?

it doesnt matter what you want or think - only your clients wants and needs - i they want that type of kitchen - give it to them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kitchens are the place that life revolves around when you start a family and continue - end of story -

It's your opinion. Thanks for input.
As you understand, want and needs are two different issues.

yes, but I think that most ppl do like larger kitchens as a family spends a lot of time in them. I have found that those who want smaller kitchens, generally rent an apartment - they are done with large family meals and want to just focus on themselves and leave the cooking to someone else

Been there, done that.

For a family, an eat in kitchen is really a need.

I want a kitchen with a few conveniences, and bright and cheerful, even if just for myself. I would not like one of those gigantic things with too many cabinets, although they look beautiful. For a family with more than one cook on duty, a large kitchen is a must.

I like a nice sink, and a place to put hot-right off the stove-pans, temporarily.
I can make do with a galley, but I like a little space. I cook every night, but I can be happy with a grilled cheese or even a bowl of cereal occasionally.

Whatever the future home owner wants, I agree, give it to them.

She said NO!

would you better have a HUGE kitchen or extra land with your house?

Enough
November 27th, 2008, 03:27 PM
Personally, I'd take the land.

I dont want to live to clean my house. It's a 1900 sq. ft. ranch and just fine for me! This way when I'm old and don't wanna (or can't) do steps we can still live here.

One thing I learned when I lived in a sub-division is that your property value is dependent on your neighbors. Have scummy neighbors that don't keep up their property, it affects your value.

That in itself is so true, when you buy a piece of property, you're also buying a neighborhood.

My kitchen is 14'x23'. Cabinets on both sides, eat in kitchen. Just wish it were a little wider for the eat in part.. Cabinets take up a lot of the width. Eventually i want to redo my kitchen so i will most likely redo the layout as well.

Do people need so many cabinets in their kitchens to put so much unnessesary stuff? What a waste of money!

it all depends on who you are asking.... I use my kitchen for a lot of things other than just cooking and eating. I have cupboards filled with supplies for my kids to do homework, one for my dogs food etc etc -

I agree, I have a lot of cupboard space in my kitchen and we use all of it.

We intentionally designed it with a lot of cupboards for things like deep fryers and deep drawers to put ladles and other large utensils. I like it because we have a lot of counter top space and the kitchen looks open and roomy without a lot of clutter, which drives me nuts :D

When was the last time you remodeled your kitchen? Did you do most of the work yourself?

Do not judge. What may be unnecessary for you may be necessary for someone else.

Zanna,

Our kitchen is the hub of our home. Very important to us. Homework, dinner, web browsing with the kids, etc.

We could stand to give up our dining room as long as our kitchen was large enough. We have an eat in area within the kitchen space along with a play area.

Thanks for starting some interesting discussions.

We went with the big kitchen. Our sons are grown but we still love all the space. The cupboards allow us to store all the small appliances. A spacious area for cooking and huge eating area.

My in-laws (children are also grown and moved out) just remodelled their kitchen. They gave up their dining room to have a bigger kitchen. Our famiy does alot of entertaining and everyone seems to gather in the kitchen.

Mom taught me early how to cook, clean, do my own laundry, etc so I would never have to rely on someone else to do that for me.

She also told me, "never trust a big butt and a smile" :D

as a side note all the great chefs have always been men, not women. Only in a few countrys is cooking seen as soley "womens work"

My mom wasnt a chef so I am not sure about what your talking about.

You should really try getting a little humour every now and then Zana. I am not "Judging" anyone.

Do people need so many cabinets in their kitchens to put so much unnessesary stuff? What a waste of money!

That depends. A high end house should have a large kitchen and lots of cabinets, but an owner of a lower end home -- the proverbial "starter home" -- should really consider if he/she will get back enough to justify a large kitchen.

I have a home built in the 1920s and significantly remodelled in the 1970s. My kitchen is small and cut up with doors, but that's what you get with an older home, especially since it's definitely NOT a "high end" home by any means. It has a "nook" eating area (I have a dining room as well). For just me, it has adequate storage and work space, but for a family, it wouldn't be adequate. For many single people, it would have plenty of storage, but I like to cook, and I really like to bake.

My solution was to add a "mini-island" to get a little more work space and storage. It wouldn't be worth it for me to do a major remodel of the kitchen, especially since I like the color scheme (hunter green and white) and the materials the previous owners put in (ceramic tile floors and counter tops). My big "remodel" has been to take out the cooktop and its cabinet and replace it with a free standing range. I then had the wall oven removed, and that space turned into a pantry, reusing the doors from the old cooktop cabinet.

I hate my kitchen.

My house was built in 1910... I also have a dining room but it is EXCEPTIONALLy formal and TOTALLY not my taste at all... So I dont use that room except for storage... anyone wanny buy a high end dining room set for $7,000? 6 chairs, a big table a giangtic china cabinet, a marble topped server....

Look nicer in your house...

my kitchen is WAY too small, and my kitchen renovation, which I am still pounding out details on, hopefully will be underway in 5years.

The most important thing about any kitchen reno/remodel is to plan it right. If you are going to spend money on only 1 thing, make it the planning end. I think a lot of people, especially people who are do-it-yourselfers, go wrong because they don't start with a good, workable plan. A screwed up kitchen plan can make a big kitchen seem lousy!

It easy fro soem peopel to say the word can't. "I can't cook, I can't speak English, I can't have a retirement plan."

No matter what you TRY to do in life, it take practice, practice, and more practice to become experienced in what you do.
