View Full Version : Official newspaper of Boston?

Once again, the Town Supervisor doesn't have the citizens in his best interest. The Orchard Park Press is now the official paper for the town? Seeing that most of the residents in The Town of Boston, read and watch The Sun, it's now a good way to sneak legal notices and other pertinent info thru, without the citizens of the town knowing. Best interest of the Town? Really? (eye roll) Politics as usual. Must have a personal connection somewhere. Watch the Orchard Park press for adds for Suburban Pest Control now....

You do comprehend that this was a town board decision, right?
It was done as a cost-savings measure, something people like you don't understand.

cost-savings measure? Or trade off for free advertizing? Or maybe a relative gets a commission on sales? Noooooooo, none of that kind of stuff goes on in the Town of Boston, does it......

I appreciate the change to the Orchard Press, from what I understand the paper costs less to advertise the public notices than the Sun and the Press does not charge the town officials like the Sun does for there subscriptions. I will keep an eye out for any advertising and let you know Justbecuz.

Which paper has a larger subscription base? To a point wouldn't you want public notices going out to a large part of the public versus less?

that is just the point. everybody gets the Sun. Nobody gets the other one. Would you expect anything less from the two-faced trio? It fits their M O. Claim cost savings as a cover for their shady secret agenda.

Before making your statement how about this?
What are the numbers?
Sun versus the other?
What was the cost between the two?
In the scheme of things if the circulation is about the same the cost shouldn't be different.

Curious Boston99 or (Gary Vera) what is the shady secret agenda? They have been in office three years now and all I have seen and read is good things. Please enlighten me. I do not attend town board meetings but I read the minutes and it just seems all positive. Now that I am a senior citizen every bit of savings helps me. So what I dont subscribe to the sun anymore I changed to the press big deal.. What are you so mad about please tell us..

I don't. Please define everybody.
Or are you just making up facts and throwing them out there to see if they will stick?

the Press does not charge the town officials like the Sun does for there subscriptions. Wonderful, so the town officials get free papers and all the residents have to buy another paper. Now I understand why they switched!!! kickbacks to the politicians, hey you said it, not me.

The OPNY Press goes for $30 per year for Senior Citizens and $35 per year for all others.
If you define that as a kickback you are truly pathetic!
To order the subscription, save your bottle return money and just order it. Better yet get with your pal and have him do it. He's a business owner, so he could write off the cost and let you read the old copies.

I dont care if its $35 or $3500. If its true what "IKNOW" said and they dont charge the town officials for their subscription, its a kickback. Lets see, you make us your official paper and we will give you yours for free!!!. Yup that sounds right. By the way, the Sun only costs $28 for seniors and $31 for all others.

Also funny that you make light of the $30 bucks like its nothing yet a little over a year ago your twn board and your buddies here were screaming about a fire contract proposal that would have cost each resident less than half that, so last year the town board was on the taxpayers side to save them $15 bucks and be a hero to them, now you say just go buy the damned paper, its only $30. Thank you town board for keeping our fire tax lower, then a year later making me buy a paper that would cost me more than my tax increase would have been. YEAH !!!!

So you also admit "Pathetic losers" were arguing over a fire tax increase of less than the cost of this paper? really puts it into perspective now doesnt it? Lets see here, the town said they did it for the residents because it would save the town "thousands", well I hope thats more than a couple. Since you were nice enough to give the subscription cost of the paper, we can do some simple math, now follow along....... There are just about 3,000 residenses in Boston, lets say 1/4 of them end up subscribing to the paper. 750 homes subscribe at an average cost of $32.50 (some seniors, some regular), thats a total cost of $24,375 to those taxpayers of Boston. Wow, glad the town saved them all that money on ad placement costs. :D

I'm starting to see just how big this issue really is.
If you're right and it is all about 'kickbacks' as you mentioned, don't keep silent ......
Because we're friends, I'm still willing to cover your paper for you.

Just so you don’t make a fool of yourself, you should probably get the actual number of subscribers in Boston from the Sun rather than using an estimate. I’m sure they’ll give it to you.
It would be wise to then do an individual analysis of each subscription to see when the start date was and when they expire. This will show the actual financial devastation to each individual subscriber.
To further support your claim, you should show where the residents are now required to subscribe to the OPNY Press to get town information. I’m pretty sure before all of this started that they used to be able to go in person to town meetings…..
Math to many is very cloudy and speculative. In my world it is very specific and not subject to personal opinion or vague accusations.
Stay strong - You're on the right path.

Slitter - per the supervisor talking to a few seniors who passed it along to me:
The town paid the Hamburg Sun approx. $350.00 for subscriptions for the Town Officials ie. Supervisor, Town Clerk, Assessor, Court Clerk, Council people. for many many years.
the Orchard Park press is charging 0 dollars for the same amount of subscriptions.
that equals a cost savings in my mind of $350.00 to the tax payers. I am not seeing this "kickback" idea at all.
The postive side I see is we have two papers covering the town now.

Not that you shouldn't want the pennies but $350 is a drop in the bucket compared to where cost need to be cut.

Just some food for thought Slitter since your in the investigative mood.
Kickbacks:
I called the town hall to ask about getting FIOS, they said Ex-Supervisor Eagan signed a 10 years exclusive non-compete deal with Time Warner and FIOS cant come to Boston. KICKBACK?
I was driving throught a souther tier town and noticed a Fire Truck at a Fire Hall with Patchin Fire Company on the side, Firemen said Jim Pluta and Rich Hawkins gave it us, they own a camp in town. KICKBACK?
I have been asking for years were does my school tax collection fee go to, finally Genzel told me Dave Shenk puts it in his pocket every year. KICKBACK?
and you think a free newspaper is a kickback? your on the totally wrong path....

Kind of funny you mentioned FIOS, My brother in law works for verizon and I asked him 2yrs ago when I could get FIOS. he said verizon is not expanding their reach for a while, there are LOTS of places not getting FIOS. Boston may never get it because there are not enough households to warrant the cost of running all the fiber optic lines, not cost effective.
As for the Fire truck The majority of the entire fire company votes on what to do with equipment, not 2 guys. If they sell or donate equipment and majority agrees as owners of said equipment, so be it. Fire companies help each other all the time, im sure Patchin has been the recipients of free or reduced cost equipment from other companies as well.
Now for Shenk, If Jeff is telling you Dave puts it in his pocket, Jeff should be reporting that to the proper authorities as a person in his position should, if not then Im sure Dave has a pretty good defamation of character suit. Have a good day sir!

The postive side I see is we have two papers covering the town now. As for this, the town SHOULD NOT be paying for subscriptions for town officials at all. I dont care if the SUN charged $350, the town should not be buying them papers. Buy your own damned paper like the rest of us will have to. Good day sir!

I agree with you Slitter the town should not pay for the papers but for the officials to check and make sure the paper puts accurate information in the paper they have to have copies of the paper. I disagree mandating a town offical to buy a paper to verify to editor puts the correct inforation in it.
Does your brother in law work in installation, management or sales for Verizon? not all employees are privy to the fact there is a non-compete agreement in place. It is true that it would not be cost effective to run fiber because everyone in Boston is required to use Time Warner cable or get a Dish.
Did you vote to give away a fire truck paid for by tax dollars?
Not sure you are correct with the defamation of character act? How is that defaming Dave's character? Ask Dave for yourself and let us know all please...

Actually he is an analyst if you must know. Non compete or not, either way they are not going to come here.
as for the fire truck it was given to them for a "donation" to the fire co. by the body, not jim and rich as you incorrectly stated.
If jeff is telling people that Dave is putting money in his pocket he is accusing him of stealing, did he report this?

Jim and Rich are part of the body, correct?
As far as putting money in his pocket, in your mind it is called stealing.
I call it collecting a fee for services rendered, then putting the money in my pocket.
