View Full Version : Where are our elected officials? - price of gasoline

PickOranges

Have you notice not one is questioning why the price of gasoline is still high compared to the drop per barrel of oil?

They should be screaming bloody murder to defend their constituents. They know how high prices stagnate our local economy and affects growth!!!!

I have not heard from ONE!! They are useless.. It doesn’t matter what political party.. We are always told to “stay the course”… it might get better.

This is another FINE example of how our elected officials have "dropped-the-ball" . This is not about helping one class over another. Everyone benefits here.

Why are they quiet on our budget mess?

“It’s a very challenging time and we’re not through it yet,” DiNapoli said during a meeting with reporters Wednesday morning in Buffalo. What happens on Wall Street has a very direct impact on New York — the entire state, not just Manhattan or Westchester County, the comptroller said.

Add to that, the current economy may lead to a $9 billion state budget gap in 2009, and it is easy to see why DiNapoli has raised a red warning flag.

The news must have a reporter on SUWNY. They should ask for an investigation and confront the politicians..

Local businesses that ship products and services out of our community. Real earned money.

Absolutely......Too bad NYS punishes businesses, and drives people that want to work hard into the earth.

Who is worse?

National grid
National Fuel gas
Or any utility comapany
They alway claim the high price of the fuel/ electric is the blame of the commodity price of the gas or electric. But WTF are they charging on the amount of gas & electric we use. HTF can I only use $20.00 of electric but the delivery charge is $35.00. You would think there would be a fixed rate as far as delivery. The more I use the higher the delivery charge is. What a rip off & they ALWAYS lie & blame tho commodity price.

PickOranges, you sure hit the nail on this thread!

Last week I was in Cleveland for work. My car takes premium and I got it for $2.82/gal right off of the Thruway. The next day back here in WNY I noted that Premium was still screaming high at $3.63!

What's with that??

Does that mean that NY has blood money on its hands for allowing and sucking on wall street to meet 20% of its operating budget?

Some math here...

# mi / yr = 12,000 (avg)

12,000 / 25 mpg = 480 gallons

price differential, approx 0.50 / gall

Total differential in payment, approx $240.

Two car family, $480.

Of course the taxes could be lowered but...

Here's a possible solution.

Drive 4500 miles less per year. Seems possible between two cars that put a total of 24000 miles per year combined 4500 is about a 20% driving reduction. That seems possible. In a couple of years I'm getting rid of one of my cars and will use the train exclusively to commute back and forth to work...

Gas is $2.20/gal in Cleveland today. I just filled up at $2.67.

I think it will eventually get itself right ; there is a time constant in the pricing here.

Why does it go up as fast as every where else but not down as fast? I don't know that but here in WNY the price behaves analogously to an electrical circuit which is applied a voltage through a capacitor.

The output voltage rises almost instantly, and in the absence of the original stimulus (voltage), the output dies away back to the original state as determined by the time constant of the capacitor and the load (demand for gas). I suppose if someone had more time and energy, this could be fully expanded into a pretty good model.

Does this make sense to anyone ?

I hate to say this but they should be able to. It's their right to make as much money as they can as long as it's really not a monopoly. Another gas station will be a little lower and get more business while the others lose...

Well, here's the problem with that. it's illegal to fix prices. If i own a Noco, and you own a Mobil across the street, it is illegal for us to "agree" on a price to charge, ie keep the price high!

What I don't understand is the excuse that we're "at the end of the pipeline."

So what? Hasn't that always been the case? Back when gas was 1.00 a gallon, most of the country was +/- 10 cents of that.

We're talking a gross difference now. Don't tell me that a city only 120 miles to our east has gas 20-30 cents cheaper bc of a pipeline. or taxes.

There's something else going on there. It's too bad everyone's gone to the pre-pay system now. We could use that to attempt a forced price change.

(AKA-refuse to pay more than the average for cities within 200 miles from us, plus the sales taxes)

Yes, it's a first order diff. eq. I know you're talking about the RC constant. Add an inductor in there and you have an RLC circ.

Back to the point, you want to send a strong message about gasoline and its taxation, CONSUME 20% LESS. That will really send the oil companies scrambling. Sell your SUV or drive it into the river I don't care, but consume less and you'll send a stronger message than any mb could muster.

I am surprised anyone is even questioning the cost of gasoline... you would think after decades of leading the nation in various costs, fees and taxes we would be well.....used to it.

It is just NY they say... but then somehow people leave for other states with less taxes on everything.

the reason gas is so high here is because all the stations are making HUGE profits on gasoline, making up for the subpar profits. I know this because one of my family members buys gasoline on the wholesale market for a chain of stores.

Also, there was a guy on the radio about 2weeks ago who said that his stations are paying about 22K for a tank of gas, well the average truck carries around 10,000 gallons. so 10,000 / 22,000 comes out to $2.20 per gallon the stations are paying for a gallon. Its even lower today. Its not taxes, its stations keeping the prices high. And indian stations are just flat out raping people.

BTW; because of this, my gasoline consumption has dropped by 50%. Right now, I am filling my car 2x a month. Where as before I was filling my truck every week. So I went from buying 80 gallons of gas a month, to buying 20 gallons of gas a month. so actually more than 50%.
