So what were some of the weirdest pets you had?

I found some old photo's of a reef tank I had for about 18 years....

Here is sponge bob before he was famous:

The weirdest pet I had was a turtle, that turned out NOT to be a turtle.
When I was 3, my uncles (who were @ 11 and 13) gave me a pet turtle to take care of in a shoebox. They told me to keep it hidden from my mother, since she does not like pets. I feed it carrots and other salad veggies. He would never come out of his shell. My uncles told me that turtles are very scared and he was out when I wasn't looking.
After @ 2 weeks, my mother noticed a smell coming from that shoebox under my bed. It was the rotting veggies.
My uncles had painted a rock and convinced me it was a turtle.
You'd think I would have learned from the Mr Potato Head that was a potato with google eyes on it.
True story. I was a very trusting kid. You can see how that disolved over the years!

TWICE I've had a tank with about 8 Newts and Fiddler Crabs.
Just thought they looked cool.

Always though that Newts are really cool looking.

i had a basenji...they're a really tough breed of dog....i gave him away when my oldest son was born...i loved him but it had to be done...the guy i gave him to ended up shooting him....

i also had a mixed breed, mostly terrier, that had been hit by a car (or cars)...he had probably been hit prior to my finding him on the side of the road (harlem rd...nr genesee)....he survived and i had this blind in one eye, teeth missing, bundle of love for a long time...he was a gem!!!

I had a pet goose that turned on me when I was younger, he ended up as a dinner. then I had a pet skunk he lasted a little over a year that's when we learned you sometimes had to descent them more then once. my room was not the same for almost a year. Farmer gave me a Billy goat that I loved but it hated my dad. It didn't butt him it just pushed against him and bit at his legs. My pet crow used to walk the cloths line pulling out the cloths pins that got in his way and leaving droppings on Moms laundry. My bantam rooster used to attack my sister. it only took me two weeks to teach him that trick. then they finally got me a dog like the other kids had

My mom had peacocks. During mating season, they made a noise that sounded like a shrill "HELP". The neighbors didn't appreciate it all hours of the night. They would call the Clarence dog warden. As a courtesy to the callers, he would come and check it out. If they called back, he would tell them that it was mating season. They would just have to wait it out.

She also had some kind of snakes. She would keep frozen mice in a freezer in the barn. My brother and my ex-husband used to love to watch my mom feed the mice to the snakes. NOT ME.

Growing up, we had all kind of dogs. When I was very little. we had a standard poodle and a toy fox terrier. Later on a mongrel (Beagle mix), toy poodles, miniature poodles, a schnauzer, a pair of white german shepherds, a regular german shepherd, an olde english sheepdog, and a couple doberman pinschers.

We also had a capuchin monkey named Cocoa (talk about a "pickle" puller). We ended up giving him to the Oppenheim Zoo. He looked just like one of my parents' bar patrons. We had 3 ponies (Star & Betsy can't remember the other name). We also had a female donkey who fooled around with the male pony. So then we had a hinney. All that menagerie was gone by our mid-teens.

We managed to kill off the first goldfish we got in less than a month.

We just got two more yesterday, but not from the pet store, from our across the street neighbors. They have a pond in their back yard.

The big one is Clara II (after deceased Clara I).

The other one is Eric.

Pops worked at Bethlehem Steel and I had a bat for a while. A Snake as well that I picked up in Grand Island back in the day.

Mom wasn't crazy about any of those so she played terminator when I was at school.

All of my life I have had a cat. 3 in total and all three of them stayed with me until they died.

Zabu my last cat was with me for 18 yrs and traveled the world with me when I was in the Army.

I miss her terribly.

I managed to avoid my kids getting goldfish the entire day on the 4th of July when they were giving them away in Lancaster. Then we were on our way home from watching the fireworks and some girl pulls up in a Blazer with bags of goldfish in her hand, saying she didn't have anywhere to keep them and would we take them. Then I was cornered and would have of course been the Bitch Of The Millenium had I not said yes. Then my ex won a fish and brought it over when she found out we had the first two and that I had bought a little aquarium for them. They all died one by one and she kept buying/winning more and bringing them over. Finally the last one died about two weeks ago and the aquarium is sitting on the shelf in my bathroom, ready for next 4th of July.

I have to wonder how many goldfish got flushed or simply died in plastic baggies because people won them and didn't have the means or desire to take care of them. :( At least I tried...

LOL I know, I needed to get the kids a pet and I figured a goldfish would be a good "disposable pet." But when Clara got sick and died, it was actually kinda painful and upsetting... believe it or not. She hung on for over a week just looking more and more decrepit, with all this goo and crap forming on her body... and her fins rotting off. I swear she even had seizures. We did everything: we changed the water; we gave her the little fish medicine pellets; vacuumed the tank...

Come to think of it, maybe we killed Clara by taking care of her TOO MUCH? I have some work friends who claim they have goldfish that are over a few years old and that they just "leave them in the tank, feed them only once a day and never even bother to drain and change the water."

But these two little fish are from a backyard pond. Hopefully they are the good old "home grown and hardy" kind.

My one and a half year old is already getting attached to them. I think the other kid, who is five, might realize that fish don't last forever.

The fish we have now we bought at Walmart with 3 others for our pond 3 years ago. 2 died right away the 3rd became lunch for a raccoon or maybe a heron one day last summer and the last one is still going strong. She is an albino who lives in the pond during the warm months and in a tank in basement during winter. I feed her once a day and she survives just fine. Even with the kitten staing at her all winter long LOL. No special treatment for her and she is probably 5 inches long now :D

Would you believe my mom found either a gerbil or hamster complete skeleton in a wall when they were remodeling the house I grew up in. I wonder which one it was :)

I briefly had a little field mouse the cat brought in. He died.

I had a little blue fish, the Japanese fighting fish, who had so much personality. When it was feeding time he swan across the top of the water making an eating motion. He died after I put some of that water neutralizer in his water. I had used it before so I don't know what happened. I felt very bad.:(
