I want a new TV.. I have a Sony Wega 40" glass tube 300 pound monster that I just don't want to move. It's on the second floor and would be tough to move back downstairs where I should have left it.
I went to circut city and best buy. I can't believe how many different types of TV's there are now.
The room I will put it in is about 15 feet by 14 feet
What size do you all think would be cool?
I looked at this 58"er
Panasonic - 58" 1080p Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV
http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/8939/8939955_rb.jpg (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8939955&type=product&id=1215217076241)

Samsung - 58" 1080p Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV

And some 42" to 52"..
Anyone buy anything lately that they are very happy with?

Don't be jealous. Just go work or something to make some money and go buy one. :) I'm serious.. I'm just some smuck no different than anyone else here. If I can do it anyone can.

Make sure you use the hdmi connections. Even non-HD pictures look about 500% better!

I got side tracked about our furnace when it broke. Had a new high efficiency one put in. Will get something 48" - 50"ish.... Size of the room and all.
Furnace was more important than the TV :) I'll get something late Jan or so.
One issue though.. there are JUST so many.

Is this how you buy a TV because it will look cool. Have you've done any research on the TV itself like Plasmas TV are not the best TV to buy. Questions you might want to ask yourself are
1. how much TV do I really need.
2. Will the TV take up too much room space.
3. Does the TV run at 120 megahertz or above
4. Does it have full HD or half HD.
5. How many 1080 series does the TV have on the market.
6. Is the TV a Energy Saver product, and how much power will it need to pull.
7. What is its life expectancy 2, 3, 4, 5, years.
8. Is the price what I want to pay.
9. How many stores have I compared shopping at.
10. Will the TV carry all my other components like DVD, Game systems etc..or will it have limited ports.
You do realize Circuit city has filed for bankruptcy, why buy from a store that will be closing within a year ?
Sears is too high, good product but too high in price they are trying to make a killing.
Target, well that's a shot in the dark like Wal-mart.
Best buy, poor product in my book, example my brother bought to new TV within 8 months best buy TV went dead; lol made in china.
Pick up a consumer report magazine on the new TVs coming out in 09 because many will be your newer Dp TV's with higher pixel resolutions.

I have an LG 42" Plasma. Great picture! LG makes a very nice LCD also. I think the best thing to do is to look at the TV's next to each other and compare how the picture looks. Make sure the TV you get is at least 1080P. One more thing to consider is room lighting. If you will have direct sunlight, an LCD would be the better choice.

Ambilight was such a gimick! To be honest it does add a cool feel to the TV, but you have to hav the TV mounted on a white that's painted SOLID white. You have to turn off all the lights arround you. how many poeple have rooms that fit this? Not many!
chiefhoey
December 16th, 2008, 01:19 PM
Most movie theaters do turn off the lights. The point of the gimmick is to get movie theater effect. People dont have white walls? Funny every apartment I painted out was white. If you dont have a big enough wall you probably shouldnt buy this product.

Hi Mike , I have a 61 inch LCD (SONY) , it's in my southern family room which gets severe sunlight during the day , needless to say , I have to go into the northern front living room to watch my 36 inch CRT TV on sunny days............so sun does indeed affect the pic on an LCD...........

The default shinier screen of the Plasma is very reflective. Although I know that they do make both the dull and the shiny finish in the LCD and Plasma screens. Direct sunlight would be bad in either case. I would try to find a way to block direct sunlight with a curtain of shades. 61"! Nice!

You really can't tell how good a TV looks in a showroom. All have too much red- that's on purpose to catch your eye. From there, it only gets worse.
It's definitely worth it to buy a calibration DVD. Don't pay for ISF calibration- your display drifts as it ages and it will definitely fall out of calibration. Too much money, they're charging $300 plus these days.
Before you start to look at displays in person, get some idea of what you want to get from the TV. This is a very good place to start...

Samsung has made one the best PC/LCD monitors for years; their TVs are some of the best in terms of performance these days. When price is factored in, they're a clear winner. The only ones that come close to a calibrated A650 series is a Pioneer Kuros and those are a mid-sized fortune in comparison. Panasonic is also selling some very good hardware these days.
Look into the DVD calibration disc- trust me, you'll be amazed at the results.
It's a good time to be buying for home theater.
Amazon is selling the 58" Plasma 650 series for $2900. Best Buy is carrying the exact same model for $3550. No surprise those guys are also struggling. 6th Avenue looks to be doing well; they're running a 33% off promotion on 2009 Denon AVRs! These are the slick new ones that use Audyssey to fix your room's acoustic problems. This unit is selling for about $600 with sales tax and free shipping in NY State. My last TV was a 53" 4:3 CRT RPTV that also did HD. It was a pretty good compromise but the weak brightness and constantly adjusting the convergence was a headache. As big as that TV was, size-wise, it's basically a hollow box and very light for the size. I bought that at Advantage too, and when I bought it the price there was very competitive.
My new plasma lights up the entire room, weighs 123 pounds, and hangs on the wall via six lag bolts

Uh, CRT RPTVs are not uncommon. Nor are they new, nor innovative. And it stands for 'cathode', not 'cathoid'.
This TV was unique that it was a 4:3 53" that did 41" wide/1080i HD. 3 CRTs, one for each color, projected on a single mirror. This was state-of-the-art for at least five years.

Sorry a Korean Guy name "josh", Samsung has made the Majority of LCD pannel and assemblies for Sony over the last 5 years. INFACT sony does not manufacture a single thing electronic with there name on it (as told by a sony rep)If Samsung does assemble Sony TV's, I'm sure they do so to Sony's specifications.

By the way, Dougles, I've always wondered if stores, such as Circuit City, tweak the settings on certain TV's they want to push the most.
Any idea?

Of course they would. No need to get indignant here- we are all here to learn. :) If you decide you want to buy some other home theater stuff, go over to AVSforums.com and read up, or post here and I'll see if I can help you.
FYI- Sony deliberately specifies a defocussed blue on their CRTs of any sort. I can email you the service manual to my old TV to prove this. I doubt this is unique for CRTs, but there it is.
The single best thing about plasma and LCD is they can't do this sort of crap anymore. They still do too much red push but that can be calibrated away, for the most part.

The stores might. The TV manufacturers set their default settings to do this (see previous post) in case the stores decide they don't want to.

Well with the 2 stores i worked at we never Intentionally changed the settings, we did get alot of those customers who messed with them (most were know it all canadians), but once they left we changed them back to the std settings.
Obvioulsy i only speak for 2 of the 600+ CC stores and 0 of the 800+ BB stores. I do know of other places SA,SEARS and ROSA's that would do somthign like this. More then would show HD on the TV they wanted to sell via and HDMI vs component.
At CC however we used to have a great display, we offered a service that was $199 which one of our techs would go out hook everything up for you including a SS and actually Spider calibrate your TV. It was a great deal. So we had 1 tv in our store that showed you a before and after of what the calibration would do. Otherwise we left them at STD settings in our store. Mainly because what I think looks good my be crap to you!
