WHEATFIELD: Sherwood Valve to close in October

Niagara Gazette
Workers at Sherwood Valve in Wheatfield were told Monday that the Liberty Drive plant would be closed on Oct. 11. It will effect a reported 138 workers.
Company officials announced the closing Tuesday, calling it part of a consolidation of all manufacturing and assembly operations into the company’s Washington, Pa., and Cleveland facilities.
County and state officials had made an effort to keep the 85-year-old local company in Wheatfield earlier this year with an incentive package.
Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte said Michael A. Casale of the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency met with Sherwood officials in February and was alerted to (the consolidation plans.)
Casale then approached Sherwood officials with the incentive package in March but never received a response, DelMonte said.
The company will now move production and assembly of industrial valves to Cleveland, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and products such as valves for diving, medicine and life-support will go to the 130-person Washington facility, along with an undetermined number of jobs, said Jerry Farina, corporate communications director for Taylor-Wharton International LLC, Sherwood’s parent company.
“The consolidation of production from three to two facilities will yield significant manufacturing efficiencies, contribute to streamlined administration practices and generate opportunities to leverage raw materials, inventories, labor skills and similar processes among Sherwood’s multiple product lines,” said Roger Carlson, president of Sherwood, in a release.
Product lines currently assembled and tested at Sherwood’s Niagara Falls factory include industrial valves, medical valves, SCUBA products, life support valves and propane valves and fittings.
The company expects energy consumption related to the valve business to decrease by approximately 30 percent and predicts a 30 percent reduction in waste generation.
DelMonte said the state Department of Labor has been notified and will be offering its assistance to Sherwood employees.
The transition to Pennsylvania won’t be a smooth one unless worker unrest there is rectified.
Unionized employees of Sherwood Valve are currently on strike after efforts to negotiate a new contract broke down last week, according to the Washington, Pa., Observer Reporter. A union representative said the workers’ previous contract expired in April
