How is it that this gem hasn't been commented on here in over a day since it broke?

Alaska Senator accused of receiving $250K in gifts, services from company

Gov'tchick? ILoved? Lacks? bLowHardy? Where are all of you faithful stalwarts against corruption and fraud?

Oh, wait....it's a REPUBLICAN that's in trouble. Not worth commenting on, I suppose...

Perhaps you should read more than just headlines of the story. He's accused of not fully disclosing gifts received from the contractor. The gifts themselves aren't the legal issue here, although it's a reflection of his character I suppose. I'm willing to bet $250k in perks is a drop in the bucket for any senator, especially one who's been in office since 1968.

Really, it's not big news. The only reason it's gone anywhere on the internet is because he's the 'tubes' guy.

Just like we are waiting for the court case on William "Cold Cash" Jefferson

Oh, good...explain it away with "it's not that much in the scheme of things." Stevens is the first Senator indicted in 2 decades. It may just be a little more serious than your garden variety "side deal."

ILoved...since when have you been interested in legal proof in what you say or write? (for the record, Willie Jeff is guilty as sin, and we all know it).

Lobbyism in all forms (including 'gifts') should be illegal.

I think that it could be one of the most important changes that could be brought about in order to make things within the american political system better.

I'm not republican, just wondering, is $250K all that much nowadays? 1 million isn't anymore and $250,000 is far less. Not that I would refuse $250K, just wondering out loud in a message posting sorta way.

Stevens is the first Senator indicted in 2 decades.

That's because the Senate has been Republican dominated for three decades. If you want to find indicted crooks you'll have to look to the House Democrats like Jim Traficant and William Jefferson for starters. Actually it's a pretty long list. There's a reason why nearly every mob boss and trade union racketeer since Roosevelt has hand their hand in a Democrat's pocket.

Are the many millions of dollars Obama got for his greedy contractor friends in Chicago important to you?

Democrats - the party of queers, trade union racketeers, and organized crime mobsters, and which still buys the black vote for five bucks a head in urban areas. There's a reason we have the term "Chicago Style Election" and we owe it all to Democrats. I dare you to go into a courthouse anywhere in Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, or Jersey and try to get a job sweeping floors if you're not a registered Democrat. For Democrats it's all about getting themselves into a position to take bribes. We've got bad Republicans too, but at least your chances are still somewhat better with them. I can at least name a handful of good people who are Republican politicians. I don't know of any good Democrats. I'm not saying there aren't any, but I sure can't think of a single one that doesn't have dirt on him/her.

That was awesome. It's amazing in this day and age that anyone can stick up for politicians and political parties so vehemently.

I'm impressed.

lierd6109, they all have dirt on them, they're politicians. The sad thing is that only some of them get caught.

You're daft. First you complain that Stevens "hasn't even been proven guilty." Then you complain about the "alleged crimes against (of) the Clintons". Guess who was never even INDICTED for any of those "crimes"? That's right, the Clintons. Guess who WAS the first Senator to be indicted in 25 years? That's right! Stevens.

I do believe, Lacks, that you were one of the ones to pile on William Jefferson. He still hasn't been convicted of anything. Which of these words do you wish to eat, Mr. Lackawanna?

My point wasn't that the Democrats are perfect. My point was (and you're doing a wonderful job of illustrating it) that many of you (especially you, Lacks) love to point out Democrats who have problems, but somehow keep mum, or do a great job of explaining away, Republican misdoings.

I could care less if Stevens got free home improvement. He's an idiot for doing it in a way that was blatant enough to be the first Senator charged in 25 years...but that's his bag. What I could care about is those of you who only want to shout about corruption when it's done by the other "team."

Now try finding individual republicans and democrats involved in sex crimes or adultry rather than 1700000 hits for the same small handfull of Republicans. When a Republican gets caught it's big news because it doesn't happen often, and it automatically generates a ton of web pages. In case you hadn't noticed, goofballs rule the idiotnet. Try googling "space aliens", "conspircay theory", "Mystical Kabala", or "New World Order" and you'll find a gazillion web pages about them, 90% of which were written by some 40 year old Democrat with mental problems living in his mom's basement.

Number of US Senators who have been indicted while in office: 10
Number of those who were Republicans: 8

'nuff said?

Oh, and for the record, the Repubs have NOT controlled the Senate for the past 20 years. The Dems controlled it from the Reagan years through 1994, then regained in 2006. So going back 20 years, the Repubs have had slim majorities for only 12, and slim minorities for 8.

lierd6109

I don't know where your numbers come from, but they appear to be incorrect.

US Attorneys have prosecuted 7 times as many Democrats as Republics since 2000. More republicans have been convicted, but the democratic mafia is pretty good about making evidence disapear. But if you really want to get into numbers of indictments and convictions concerning pubs and dems, try looking at local governments where every other week dems are going to jail on corruption charges. If Stevens' indictment isn't big news in AK, that's probably because the 6 democrats who have been indicted there during recent years overshadows it considerably. Hell, he'll probably get re-elected simply because he's still better than the trash he's running against. Yes, he's a bad guy, as is his son, (I was stationed at Ft Rich in 77-78) and I've never understood why he was so popular, but in this case it's a matter of electing a bad guy who's still better than the other bad guys. Sad but true.

As to who has had the majority in the senate, I said, "That's because the Senate has been Republican dominated for three decades." Not two decades. It's been a tie for the past two. This is from the US Senate website (http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/history/one_item_and_teasers/partydiv.htm):

1980-83 republicans
1983-85 republicans
1985-87 republicans
1987-89 democrats
1989-91 democrats
1991-93 democrats
1993-95 democrats
1993-95 democrats
1995-97 republicans
1997-99 republicans
1999-01 republicans
2001-03 tie at 50 seats each
2003-05 republicans
2005-07 republicans
2007-09 democrats

I count 8 republican to 6 democratic run Senates there along with one tie covering almost 3 decades.

Thank you for pointing out that Democrats are not "exempt" from the EXACT same temptations and subsequent corruption(s) the GOP has demonstrated with pride.

Party name is just that;A name.
Those who pride themselves as Democrats or Republicans are living in a fantasy world of meaningless lables and elected officials who could care less if their public suffers or not.

"Thank you for pointing out that Democrats are not "exempt" from the EXACT same temptations and subsequent corruption(s) the GOP has demonstrated with pride."

First of all, setting off a block quote for that long list for no reason is just annoying and only makes people have to wait longer for a page to load. Simple quote marks work quite well the majority of the time for people who actually know how to write.

Secondly, prove it. I can add to his list of corrupt dumbocrats considerably.

Lobbyism in all forms (including 'gifts') should be illegal.

I think that it could be one of the most important changes that could be brought about in order to make things within the american political system better.

qu1nn
Lobbying, not -ism. It's a verb, not a school of thought. Also, in practical and mechanical terms, it is essential for a representative democracy. Getting rid of "all forms" is next to impossible and, quite honestly, undesirable.

The thread boss on SpeakupWNY is making me shorten it. Either way, it was getting kind of thin and seemed focused on events that have occurred 10, 20, 30, even 50 years ago! I'm kind of surprised the whole "wrong side of the War of Northern Aggression" didn't get a mention. heh. Though in fairness, the modern sympathizers of the South are, by an overwhelmingly margin (I'll bet,) Republicans.

Lobbying, not -ism. It's a verb, not a school of thought. Also, in practical and mechanical terms, it is essential for a representative democracy. Getting rid of "all forms" is next to impossible and, quite honestly, undesirable.

Thanks for the correction of my slang use.
Regardless of the inappropriate use of the word, I personally use it to also include political action committees, as well as industry contributions.

You are insane if you really believe it is necessary, while maybe it is true for mob rule (democracy). I cannot see how this 'legal bribery' makes a good republic.
Please explain.

All I see is corporations allowing individuals to bribe those that make the laws that in turn effect that business. Free market or the basis for a quasi-fascism like system?

This is priceless. Here is where that fabulously long list came from:
http://www.boycottliberalism.com/

That site is a good laugh. Seriously, you begin to think it's satire or a parody, but this is for real. That guy, and I bet it's one guy who writes all that stuff, really allows "liberals" to essentially and often indirectly dictate his tastes. Boycotting the X-Files not because, frankly, lets let dead dogs decompose properly. Instead, it seems his beef is with Gillian Anderson and given the nature of the site, I assume it's a "liberal" beef. How sad. Nothing like a website designed to explicitly inform you what you should avoid or not like for solely, in most cases, indirect and non-causal reasons. What a miserable way to go through life.

An abridged list of suggested boycotts -

Products:
Air America Radio - Al Franken / Liberal Bias
AOL/Time Warner- Ted Turner- Major Shareholder
Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream - Ben Cohen
Bon Jovi (CD's) - Jon Bon Jovi

CBS Evening News - Katie Couric
Citgo Gas- Hugo Chavez

Face the Nation - Bob Schieffer
Hardball - Chris Matthews
HBO - Simmons/ Maher/ David/ Thomasson

Hustler Magazine & Videos- Larry Flynt
Jerry Springer TV & Radio - Jerry Springer

and on and on and on. . .

The newspapers you shouldn't read (http://www.boycottliberalism.com/Liberal-newspapers.htm).

Please explain.
For starters, in simplified and pragmatic forms, lobbying is not bribery. Lobbying is "try to influence the thinking of legislators or other public officials for or against a specific cause." Essentially it means "to influence." When you call your town councilman and advocate for a certain position on an issue, you are lobbying. When you offer said councilman a [I]quid pro quo in exchange for a favorable vote on that issue, you are bribing. That is an important difference.

I think we share a common view, so bear me out here for a second. You cannot get rid of lobbying, the whole point of having an elected representative in government is to have someone who's opinion you can influence (i.e. lobby.) There is no way to make it illegal without seriously running afoul of the Bill of Rights. But you're right that the system used to lobby a lot of our elected officials is deeply flawed and is ripe for some real philosophical reorganization, in my opinion.

Sorry 'bout the Grammar Nazi™, it's a part-time tick.

Well I, along with most dictionaries, have to fully disagree that "influence" is bribery (the logical extrapolation of your statement.) Bribery results in "influence," but not all "influence" is bribery. A tangible and beneficial quid pro quo is required in order for bribery to occur.

"That guy, and I bet it's one guy who writes all that stuff, really allows "liberals" to essentially and often indirectly dictate his taste."

How? I see nothing there whatsoever taste related.

"Boycotting the X-Files not because, frankly, lets let dead dogs decompose properly. Instead, it seems his beef is with Gillian Anderson and given the nature of the site, I assume it's a "liberal" beef. How sad."

"The X-Files" is just one of many sci-fi shows. There are certainly others just as good or just as bad. Having the balls to give one of those shows up because of personal integrity shows responsibility--not bad taste.

"Nothing like a website designed to explicitly inform you what you should avoid or not like for solely, in most cases, indirect and non-causal reasons."

Boycotting the products of people whose philosophical values are in the gutter is a smart way to render them powerless, and generally the power of those people is nothing more than popularity due to media overexposure anyway. There's nothing more "causal" than that. Liberals are popular with the uneducated, and the reason they are is simply because they own the media and throw liberal crap at them 24 hours a day. People have always assumed that whatever is advertised a lot, or heard on the radio a lot, or shown on TV constantly must be good. Liberals minds have always been easy to control in that way whether they had you buying disco and hip-hop records or watching soaps and reality TV. You're suckers from the word go.

That's because the Senate has been Republican dominated for three decades.
Seriously. Crack a history book or, better yet, use the Google.

If you want to find indicted crooks you'll have to look to the House Democrats like Jim Traficant and William Jefferson for starters.
And "enders" as far as the last few years are concerned. Match that with Tom Delay, Bob Ney, Duke Cunningham, Ted Stevens, Larry Craig (unjustly, imo, but funny for it's hypocrisy none-the-less,) a couple more I cannot think of and I'm just picking on the Republican members of Congress. Move out into the Republican party leadership, cohorts and assorted and undeniably Republican figures we have Jack Abramoff, David Safarian (sp?), Scooter Libby, Ted Haggard, the state rep. in FL that just had to offer the black guy $20 and oral sex out of fear et cetera.
Actually it's a pretty long list.
How far back we gonna go? So far you've only offered two examples. That hardly makes the case for a long list. I rattled those names off the top of my head. Imagine if we consulted one of the many databases tracking Republican scandals.
There's a reason why nearly every mob boss and trade union racketeer since Roosevelt has hand their hand in a Democrat's pocket.
That wouldn't have anything to do with the historical fact that the Democrats have been in control of Congress, for all intents and purposes, since the New Deal? Would it? With short Republican intervals spread out over time.
Are the many millions of dollars Obama got for his greedy contractor friends in Chicago important to you?
Obviously they're not important enough to you to explain what you're talking about. Just through it out there and see if it sticks, right?

Is McCain's predilection towards young, blond multi-millionaires over the wife of his children important to you? He was technically a bigamist for a brief time. (Ya know, just throwing it out there.)
Democrats - the party of queers [roual duke - *cough* Larry Craig, Jef Gannon, Ted Haggard, Mitch McConnell (he's not fooling anyone,) Duke Cunningham (check out some of the "entertainment hired for him by his lobbyist friends,) Mark Foley, Bob Allen, Glenn Murphy, Jr., Log Cabin Republicans *cough*] trade union racketeers, and organized crime mobsters, and which still buys the black vote for five bucks a head in urban areas.
That's because your world-view requires you to believe all those generalities. Otherwise you'd realize how stupid and cliched most of that sounds. Never mind the glaring false comparisons and assumptions not supported by reality. Maybe it's not your politics thats keeping you from the floor sweeping jobs?

Really? Which actors (not because of their acting, but personal political views) or movies to avoid, which music to not listen to? What do you think defines taste?

Giving it up because of the personal politics of ONE of the actors shows childish reasoning. Seriously, do you get out of line at the DMV because the clerk appears to have different political views than yours?
"Nothing like a website designed to explicitly inform you what you should avoid or not like for solely, in most cases, indirect and non-causal reasons."

Yeah, not like anyone ever accomplishes anything, they just get over-exposed.
There's nothing more "causal" than that.
I suppose. . . were that actually a causal relationship.
Liberals are popular with the uneducated
That's why liberals just bring in the votes in poor rural areas - especially the Appalachians and the Ozarks, it's like Hippieville and More-Hippieville in those parts of the country. You know else is popular with uneducated people? (The people that voted for a dry-drunk because they would rather have a with him than his opponent.) Republicans.
and the reason they are is simply because they own the media and throw liberal crap at them 24 hours a day. People have always assumed that whatever is advertised a lot, or heard on the radio a lot, or shown on TV constantly must be good. Liberals minds have always been easy to control in that way whether they had you buying disco and hip-hop records or watching soaps and reality TV.
Too bad liberals, by your brilliant analysis, like to observe and make up their own minds and don't have awesome internet resources to tell us "what's hot and what's not."
You're suckers from the word go.
You really gonna say that, then say this?
"Not surprisingly, there is no http://www.boycottconservatives.com"

Lacks, you 100% missed my point. Well, actually you made it for me. You're more than happy to point out and jump on every Democrat indiscretion you can find (and speaking of that incredibly long list, how many of those have been convicted? I counted 15 through about the first half of the list). But you have absolutely ZERO interest in posting the same list of Republicans.

My point is, you're blinded by the fact you think you belong to a certain "team." It's called partisanship, it's called hypocricy, and it's not good for any of us.

And I'm STILL wanting to know, Mr. L, are we waiting until someone is convicted to officially condemn them? If so, then you need to take back about half your list, apologize for the posts you made on Willie Jefferson, et al. If not, then man up and admit that one of "your guys" is as dirty as the rest.

I believe that the time frame we were using was 20 years. Regardless, it's fairly even, and even those in the majority rarely held more than a few seat lead.

With the politicization of the DOJ, do you really find it suprising that Dems were investigated more than Repubs? Is it not telling that even though 7 times more Dems were investigated, more Repubs have been convicted?

Senator Stephens had his case dismissed to bad the smear campaign against him worked and he lost his bid to be reelected.

Congressman Jefferson did not win his bid to be reelected and his court trial is on going. Justice is really swift.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Supreme Court refused Monday to settle an ongoing dispute over the prosecution of former congressman William Jefferson on corruption charges.

Former Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson says he is innocent of all the charges against him. The justices' denial of Jefferson's appeal means his criminal corruption trial is likely to proceed to trial this month.

The Louisiana Democrat claims that he was the victim of an overly aggressive FBI raid of his Capitol Hill offices in May 2006. He was indicted 13 months later on public corruption charges.

At issue in the appeal was whether he had constitutional protection as a lawmaker, so that evidence obtained in that search should not have been presented to the grand jury to obtain the indictment.

No.

The fact still remains (and is undisputed) that Stevens received services for which he did not pay. These services came from a political donor. Absolutely unacceptable. The (Bush) Justice Dept screwed up royally and ended in a mistrial. That doesn't mean he was "innocent". It means his conviction was set aside and he's not worth going after. I completely approve of Holder's handling of the situation.

And I don't believe I've ever defended Jefferson...indeed neither has the Democratic party. He was denied endorsement in his election. Personally, I believe I said that I think he should be thrown into a corner and fed bread crumbs as long as he's in the House (well, maybe not in those words, but the same sentiment). I've never seen any of the "conservatives" here claim anything but innoncence and clemency for Stevens (or any Repub).

There's the difference....Dem's are afraid to admit it when their poop stinks.
