There has been much talk in recent years of bringing Erie County water to the Southtowns. Why is there this rush to get public water to citizens that already have water supplied by their own private wells for FREE!!??!! Yes , there are some people that don't have enough water being supplied by their own private well, but why force the rest of the taxpayers to pay for something that they don't need and don't want? The average water bill is estimated to cost the taxpayers in those areas anywhere from $880.00 to over ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS EACH AND EVERY YEAR!! For some property owners on a fixed income, that would have the effect in some instances, of doubling their yearly property tax. Why have'nt the people that are in need of water simply drilled a deeper well? It would cost the towns a lot less to help pay for drilling a deeper well for those property owners that need a better well, than to take on an incredibly expensive water expansion project!
Three other points to consider.
1. Holland has it's own water supply. Can Erie County Water Authority garrentee that the users of their water would save money if the Town of Holland decided to switch?
2. Right now, if a waterline breaks in Holland, the response time is very fast. This is because the water department is in Holland. What would the response time be from the Erie County Water Authority if a watermain were to need fixing?
3. The cost for this project would be very expensive. If this project was done, what would happen after the project is paid for? Would the taxpayers see a reduction in their tax bills? Or, would the taxpayers keep on paying for the project long after the project has been paid for?
I still believe that it would be cheaper for the towns where this project is proposed for, if the towns would find some way to fund well drilling for private homeowners that need to drill a deeper well, but cannot afford to drill one. This would be in the best interests of the towns because it would save taxpayers money.
