Oprah did her show on the horrors of puppy mills.

I hope this will wake up America to the horrors of puppy mill breeders.

Hidden cameras showed the deplorable conditions, dogs in cages with no human contact. Most have never stepped on grass. Mother dogs having litter after litter and killed when their usefulness is over. They also showed a shelter and how they decided which dogs were to be put down and how they do it humanely.

She also stressed:

Have your pet spayed or nuetered for their health and safety, and pointed out that there are ways to get help for the cost.

Avoid buying from a pet store, check out animal shelters and rescue groups.

If buying from a breeder, check them out. Visit the facility. Ask to see the mother dog/cat.

This show was long over due, I was sobbing during parts of it.

I saw it and it was so sad. I wish I could of brought them all home to give them some TLC. My parents had purchased a dog from a mall in PA many years ago and years after he was gone we saw a show about puppy mills and figured he came from one.
I have had 2 dogs of my own and they are both from the SPCA. Great dogs. Would never get them from anywhere else. My cats were all adopted as well.

I still can't believe people treat animals that way. It's so WRONG

My dogs are rescued dogs. Neither were from puppy mills. Both were just plain unwanted. One had so many ticks on her as a puppy she was anemic. The other was rescued from being abandoned. Neither came from the SPCA. Although I highly recommend them as a starting point in finding a new family friend. I told my husband that when we get a house with land that I want one dog per acre :)
I love dogs :)

I also was crying during that show. Very very sad indeed. I've had 4 cats over the last 20 years and they've all been rescues. Still have 2 that are like my family!

I didn't watch it because I never watch Oprah (or afternoon TV period), and like others, I would be a sobbing basket case. Hopefully, because it's Oprah and so many do watch her show and heed her advice, the message will be really "heard" by millions of people who didn't pay attention to it before!

All my crits have been "rescues", from the stray shepherd mix puppy that my brother crawled under the neighbor's porch to get (the neighbor wanted him shot) to the Tennessee Walking horse I got for the cost of hiring a truck to cart her from where she was to my Dad's farm, to the gray tabby cat I got yesterday from the Chautauqua County Humane Society. Even if you want a "purebred", you can still rescue an animal since there are numerous breed rescue groups all around the country, especially for dogs and horses!

Do not buy puppies from Steve's Wonderful World of Pets on Sheridan Drive.

Or, I suppose, from any other pet store.

For that matter, don't anything from Steve's.
