In a city that is strapped for cash, one way to help close the budget gap is to eliminate unnecessary Buffalo and Erie County patronage jobs. When a region has budget problems, it does not seem practical to have job positions that are based on political favors, and that do not contribute to the efficient running of the city and county.
The control board needs to look at all patronage jobs to determine if they are actually necessary and if they are being filled by qualified individuals, based on education and previous job experience. All unnecessary patronage positions should be immediately eliminated.

Any patronage position that is deemed necessary to the efficient operation of the city or county that is filled by an unqualified person should have that person removed and the position filled by a qualified candidate from the civil service pool or a hiring board composed of non-political leaders. Our political leaders have no right to use taxpayer funds to give their friends jobs that do not contribute to the efficient running of the city or county.
