OK, initial goal, 5lbs. ultimate goal...7. :D
BPP--how are you going to do it?
I plan to cut down on sugar and eat fewer carbs. I already have a relatively low-fat diet. Also---kicking up the cardio a notch.

5 small meals each day....good carbs/protein/lots of water/exercise & stretching...

if more people join up...each participant can help others meet their goal....a built-in support group....

So, it's just you and I then?
Fine. Well, last night I increased my cardio workout and tried not to eat late...had a few wheat thins and that was it...onward.:D

That's OK. It's about being healthier...if some of us lose a few pounds in the process, so be it.

First thing I'd like to do is physical fitness: get my 5k time under 25 minutes. 2nd goal is to lose 3 inches off the waistline. I don't see HOW I could achieve both of those and not lose a few pounds in the process...I'm just not that concerned with how many pounds that happens to be.

What is interesting is how the metabolism changes as one ages. I am having a little bit of fun trying to figure out how to manage the changes; it's like a chess match. Things shift, you tweak your program a bit, find balance....just in time for another shift. :)

Initial goal - to fit into my 36 jeans again
Long term goal - to wear 36 jeans

Be back later...I have to go pick up a pizza and take a nap. :D

Am I to late? I'm trying to to lose a few pounds also. Fit into my old clothes :)

I am doing cardio/fat burn on the cardio trainer every other day with a class (step or cardio) usually opposite the cardio trainer. I also use the machines at the club every day. Only day I take off is Sunday.

I keep hearing to stay off the scale and judge your weight loss by how your clothes fit. I have been at it for almost a month now and so far so good. But I do like the idea of a support group.

Yes, the scale is not your friend. Why? Simply because if you are indeed turning some fat into muscle, muscle weights more than fat.

I will share my favorite ab exercise w/you. Get a small plastic ball, from the dollar store--they are, I think, a dollar :D and are, I would guess about 24 inches in diameter. Anyway, place under your lower back and lengthen and contract as you would lying flat on the floor; this is not a FULL sit up, just as far as you can go maintaining proper form and not compromising your lower back.. Do you know what I mean? IF you have lower back issues, maybe not for you though.

Oh those are so good. My gym has those balls available for our use and it something different from the 2 other ab machines I use. There is a 30 min ab class I went to......oh did they burn afterwards!!!

I think I have lost a few pounds. Some clothes I wear all the time are not so tight in some spots. I am very impatient though. :p

I was at 208 , now I tip the scales at approx. 187/188 , lost 20 pounds using the South Beach Diet , the recipes are actually very good for the most part , I have not been working out since I came back from Mexico , so I actually lost while even in Mexico by using a modified form of the Atkins Diet (which I would never do for longer then a week as I believe it's harmful in the long run !) I stand approx. 5'11" , so I'm not vastly overweight , in fact my wife wants me to put 7-8 pounds back on , I'd like to get to 184/185 so I can "pig-out" every once in awhile..........Used to play ball at 175 , WAY too thin for me....

I know several people who had success with it as well, and I also heard phase one is really hard to get through, but once you move into the second phase, it's not so bad.

Really, what always worked for me, when I had to drop a few quick ones, was the infamous coffee and cigarette diet. Works every time. Throw in an ex-lax for dessert and it's all good.

I gained about 5 pounds when I quit , but was playing basketball 4-5 times a week & was not married (marriage = 15-25 pounds) , plus those were the days you could eat anything at any time & not gain weight in bunches , try that now........:)

I'm not pushing the SBD , my cardiologist likes it , but also likes any good , quality eating habit , plus he likes any one where you lose weight EXCEPT the Atkins Diet , says it's WAY TOO radical . He also likes the "Mediterranean Diet" , & "Weight Watchers" , seems men do better on the SBD & women do better with Weight Watchers ? My wife "hit" a wall with the SBD , but loses with Weight Watchers , whereas I just get sick on that ? I believe Weight Watchers "support group" is VERY important for women , or I take that back , everyone can use support , I seem to do better just on the SBD w/out fanfare , etc. Once I do "hit" the weight wall , I will go to the Mediterranean Diet , as I think you're alowed red wine in VAST quantities <------ just kidding , but one/two glasses a day are actually good for you ! :)

I need to move it back to the shoulders chest and back. sounds simple but ever year it gets harder and harder to push it back up where it belongs. especially when you have COPD and cant over exert your self

I do my lower back exercises every night and a walk at a slow pace just below running out of breath. I just cant be active enough to keep things where they once were. once summer gets here the garden and yard work will move some of it. I still have a 34 waist line so I don't have very much to move. its just that the old six pack is starting to look like a 1/4 keg. my cholesterol is still low. maybe the 190 lbs should be lowered to 185 now that I'm shrinking some 6'0" instead of the 6'1" I was so long ago

I just weighed myself last night, but don't know where I started. In any case, I am happy 5 lb. lighter than my current weight, so that's my goal. I've stuck to my resolution to do more cardio, and have been ice skating regularly, but am still eating too much sugar, probably.
Congrats to Win and Bpp for your recent loss.

I try to stay of the scale since I seem to get frustrated when the pounds don't fly off. I go by how my clothes fit. Shirts fit better and my pants are looser in the leg and a little in the waist.

I am up to walking on the treadmill 2 miles at a little less that a jog. Had to give up the cardio machine since my knees complained to much but hoping that will change since I started taking glucosamine.
I still love the weight machines and am up to 200 sit ups a day on the ab machine.
Just very frustrating when you reach a plateu. I am going to speak to one of the trainers to see if they have any suggestions.

but I did by a size 12 pants and they are loose on me :) so that a plus. All I want is to fit in the summer clothes from last year.

Great job BPP! I on the other hand have not lost any more. No clue why. I am trying to schedule appt. with the trainer at the gym to see what he says. I was hoping that 6 days a week at the gym would have me losing something more than the 5 lbs. I have in the last 6 weeks. I even found an elyptical machine thats easier on my joints. I am doing 30 min a day on it. I am hoping after another week or so the weight will start coming off some more.

do your clothes feel looser than they were??.....if you're losing body fat and replacing it with muscle, you'll not show any weight loss....muscle is heavier than fat....you're getting leaner...

are you drinking lots and lots of water???...if you think you are....drink MORE!!!

make sure that you're not in a rut at the gym.....change what you do for various muscle groups......and make sure that you're stretching....

Okay, if it's not too late, I'd like to try. Can't walk too well, lost the use of my wrists, but I can lift with my forearms really well.

Original loss was 68 pounds five years ago, got ill, up to 240 now. Was a size 10 (ahhhhhhh) now a 24 (*burp*) - just want to get to a size 16 (whew).

I'll start by weaning off Pepsi, adding more water, more carrots, celery (good for cleansing) and see where we go from there.

Up to you guys if it's okay for me to join in so late.

The Pepsi weaning is hard at first. I used to only drink Pepsi. Now I drink at least 2 liters of water everyday ( I drink the flavored water from Aldi's-no caffeine, sugar, calories) I still have my Pepsi just less.

More veggies work for me but I still hungry so try to have some protein with it so that it last longer.

Keep at it it will work, takes longer for some though. I know that from experience :D

Fire -- the eliptical is a great idea. My joints think I'm crazy to start running again too. My workouts have mostly been split fairly evenly between an eliptical, a treadmill, and a stationary bike. It's only when I do a full running workout (like yesterday) that my knees and hips stare me down and challenge me to a game of chicken.

Incidentally, as far as my goals: Can do 2 miles so far at my 5k (3 mile) goal pace...and of course the last one is the toughest. My clothes are fitting a little better..about like last September. I haven't bothered to weigh myself for about 3 weeks...

I can give you a system that worked for me. I was a power walker for many years until my heart attack stop my life in its tracks.

1. Set your run goals and allow your energy to drive your body during your run, not your thoughts.
2. Focus on one spot of your body. I used my stomach area.

3. Think of an image of a circle. Now, fill that circle with all your body energy and see that circle grow in your minds eye, and keep your focus on that image while you run.

If you practice this process and I mean keep that focus within a month your run time will drop, and you will increase your finish time in a quicker pace. This system is a mind over matter exercise, and if you are dedicated you will see, feel your speed increase over time, thus your run time becomes quicker. I could bring my walk time at Delaware Park in less than 20 minutes.

This is going to sound dumb but.....i missed my glucosomaine for at least a day perhaps two and my knees were horrible. I also had skipped a day at the gym due to my work schedule. But i hobbled into the gym with my knee brace on and got on the elipitical machine and except for a little stiffness all was good. Was on it for 40 minutes. I have decided to change the "course" I take on the machine. Work the buttocks one day and thighs the next. It seems to give my knees a little rest and not so sore. I am on the machine at least 5 days a week usually six days though. I am going to keep on the schedule until something gives out. :)

I can have only so many with each meal up to 1500 calories total. I have worked it out so it can include my Pepsi (can't totally give it up :)) I started Monday and so far the most calories I have had was 1300 !! I have also been tracking the number of calories I am burning in the gym. I weighed myself Tuesday and then today.
Well guess what??? I have lost 4.5 pounds!! I am so happy. Woohoo :D :D :D :D Really gives me the motivation to keep going.

I don't feel like I am starving myself. There are foods, mostly veggies, that I can eat nonstop so that helps.

Salmon, flaxseed, black or kidney beans, Almonds, Walnuts, Red Wine (only 5 oz a day with a meal) tuna, tofu, brown rice, soy milk, green tea, blueberries, carrots, spinach, broccoli, sweet potato (yellow not the orange), red bell peppers, asparagus, oranges, apples, bananas, tomatoes, acorn squash, cantaloupe, papaya, dark chocolate (no more then 1 oz a day), chicken, buffalo, ostrich, whole grain breads and pastas, no deep frying, brown rice, whole grain or bran cereals, dried fruits (sulfur free), ginger snaps, whole grain bran muffins, 1% cottage cheese, low fat mozarella. No sugar, no starchy or high carb content foods. No yellow vegetables eat the greens.

Down from 320 to 279 as of last week's visit. Target 240. Should also mention that I'm 6'3"

So good luck to everyone. I'm telling you, it takes some getting used to, but, I feel better, my blood pressure is 121/64, and I sleep better. A few months ago I was having some unpleasant and scary health problems.

So again. Good luck to everyone. You will feel better.

mike....that is fabulous news!!!...i hope you continue to give us updates on your progress and help others who can use some knowledge and support...

Thank you.

I've been big all my life, I did Karate and Tai Chi, so I carried it well. But it turns out that when you get older you body doesn't want to carry the weight so it tosses you a heart attack or a stroke or diabetes.

I've had the heart attack and neither you nor anyone else should go through it if it can be avoided.

I used to crave pizza and wings. Now I can sit with people eating it and don't even think about. I was hard as hell. You have to decide is it double cheese and pepperoni or keep breathing. :D

For what it's worth, after I pretty much stopped my workout routine (after Elijah was born), I've started again over the past few weeks. I have no idea what my max weight was (I'd guess sometime mid-April), but I'm down a notch on my belt, I'm wearing pants that haven't fit since last September (and the wife says my butt still looks great in them), and I"m back on track to hit my running time (getting a firm time next week with the Ronald McDonald run).

Things are looking up, even with all the rain.

Well, I'm a minute and 15 seconds from my goal (better than the 2:30 I've been off during my training runs). I guess I'm in better shape than i thought...which means no more "starting slowly" at the gym anymore.

BTW, I've got great things to say about Allentown Athletix so far...thanks to BPP for putting me on to it.

Im 5'10, 220, with a bit of a pot belly. The south beach people said my ideal weight is between 137 and 162. I think they're crazy!

Anyway, Ive decided to prepare my home and my mind over the next few weeks to begin an Atkins/South Beach combo diet the day after my birthday.

2 weeks minimum of no carbs, portion control, stretching, and mild to medium crunches and lunges to quickly get under 200 pounds. Then slowly introduce good carbs with the protien and good fats sticking to the new portion control habits, and increase the exercise for as long as possible and see whats happens.

Ive tried the atkins "keytosis" technique a few times before. The first time was fine, but the others were more difficult because of intense cravings for carbs. It reminded me of a couple times when I tried to quit smoking. Tried, but wasnt 100% in the mindset to achieve the goal until 11 years ago when I was able to quit for good. So, this time it gonna be a few weeks of pain to quicky dump some weight, and change those bad shopping and eating habits for the better.

Any advice is welcome!!!

Nearly all fad diets are dangerous to the body;Atkins is one of the worst

If you are going to lose and keep weight off for life,
before you try to lose one pound you must make the decision, black or white that you want to:

Eat healthy
Feel and look better
Excercise (type depends on you + goals)
Lower your risk for disease including those that run in you family

The first part of eating right is mental

SECOND:

The word "diet" has punitive connotations: As if eating a certain way for a certain time is some kind of "punishment";A hard fight instead of what eating right really IS: A natural way of life;Second nature.

Here are a few ideas to lose weight safely:

1) Eat 8 - 12 small meals a day spaced apart (a piece of fruit can be a meal)
2) Don't eat 3 hrs before bed-Putrefied in stomach leads to weight gain
3) Drink up to 1 gallon of water a day;Worth the runs to the bathroom
4) Drink green tea every day-Really works
5) Choose an excercise/sport you LIKE which will make it more likely that you'll stick with it
For some of the best excercise advice I've ever read, Www.T-nation.com (something like that)
6) Once you reach your target weight goal, do not think that its "OK" to eat junk food again because you'll end up as I have-Yo-yo dieting most of your life which can screw up your cardiovascular system
7) No more junk food ever again; No fatty, salty snacks snacks. Eat as much fresh food as possible.

8) Nutrasweet and all other articifical sweeteners make you GAIN WEIGHT;Avoid these poisons. FACT. Keep away from artificial colors, preservatives
AVOID ALL REFINED FOODS: EX: White flour, white rice-Avoid ALL "fat substitutes" they are poison.

9) Realize that you have a food addiction: Having to watch TV while eating is an example.

10) Eating intelligently is NOT "complex" it DOES become second nature eventually, as long as you stick with it

11) Follow sensible rules of eating and you will NEVER be hungry between meals again while eating many foods which you once may have turned your nose at. I used to HATE Salmon and now could eat a pound a day! Love it!

12) SOME nutritional supplementation is wise:

1) A WHOLE FOOD multivitamin (which you do not have to take with meals)
2) Omega 3 oil capsules
3) Calcium-Magnesium with Vitamin D3 (use only Calcium Citrate or BETTER)
4) Digestive enzymes in one capsule or tablet, ex Papain, Bromelain, Pancreatin
5) Fiber supplement (unless you have a super high fiber range of foods in your daily eating)
6) B-Complex (for mind and body)

I could go on, but if you want the real meat and potatos without the fatty BS of the mainstream advice (and I am NOT knocking BPP's advice; He's fantastic on much of his advice)

This nutritional website is nothing short of remarkable:

There was an article in 'The Buffalo News' within the last three months which covered how some "overweight" people are VERY HEALTHY and there are some people who are at their "ideal" weight or lean that are very sick (not including bad eating habits, smokers, certain chronic diseases).

Don't know how much the insurance weight charts have changed over the years;Someone could weigh Res' avg weight of 245 and have 8-10% bodyfat and be VERY LEAN.

Do know that all junk foods;Fast food (including the "healthy" menu items are physically addicting and are direct contributors to all of our top high-mortality diseases
(making parents who take their kids to McDonald's & others on a reg basis, criminal in a sense).

Eating right;Properly is not complex.
For starters, you have to get white sugar, white flour-All the refined super-synthetics out of our bodies (not talking about cleansings).
No more high-fat, greasy, salty sugary food that leaves you tired;Lethargic, pasty-looking and on.

Hell, it took me most of my life to PULL myself away from yo-yo dieting and get USED to eating foods I used to make faces at (even as an adult!)

I sure as hell don't miss pizza, wings, subs, candy, ice cream, burgers, hot dogs, fries, ect

Food is FUEL, but fuel that should TASTE GOOD
Eating right is not a trial of one's willpower but a way of life;Second nature.

When you can get to the point when snacking on fresh vegetables or fruit isn't a LABOR but something you WANT to do and ENJOY-Eating well and sensible has become "second nature."

But by MY standards, I should lose about 40 Lbs

I know that after not eating some of my favorite foods that I lose the cravings for them and also when I do try them (like blue cheese & wings) boy did I pay for it. I was sick to my stomach the whole day. I can't imagine eating those kinds of food all the time but I do have a treat everyday. keeps me on track. Since end of February 28 pounds so far. Almost to my old weight. Way laid by being sick and blew both my knees out. But I am still trying. :D

If someone wants to eat right, excercise but has no problem treating themselves to junk food now nad then, always going back to their proper eating and excercise, that great! Fine!

My approach to most things in life is "black or white"
Eat ONLY healthy food and NO "treats"
OR
Eat ONLY lousy food, gain weight and feel like crap.

Thankfully, I LOVE eating healthy now;Just feel much better than when I ate mainly garbage foods/drink;Can think more clearly too (because the mind runs on the right kind of nutrients & fuel (DUH!)

My ideal weight based on my frame with some muscle mass would probably be in the 215 -225 range; But I have a large frame;I'm an Endo-Mesomorph.

That's the thing with weight and body types; We're all a combination of Ectomorph (small, thin-boned, endurance atheletes), Endomorphs (can put on muscle and fat easily) and Mesomorphs (the athlete)
Very few of us fall into mainly one body type but they're plenty of mainly Mesomorph-types out there (HATE EM!!!)

Used to have SEVERE PAIN in my left foot which has gone away as I've lost some weight.

Speaking of food addictions, I've heard from three poeple that Tim Hortons puts a little nicotine in their coffee to make it addicitive and keep people coming back for that toilet water.
Don't mean to start an "urban legend"
Or go off topic.

I'd be happy at 215, even 210.

MYTH:
Food is NOT meant to be one of life's pleasures. Food is meant to give us the ENERGY to enjoy lifes REAL pleasures; That's why I've always been curious as to the "big deal" over gourmet cooking.

And food wouldn't be too big of a deal if most of us weren't scarfing down addictive refined foods filled with all kinds of poisons to keep us comin' back for more!

Hell, at one point I weight 380 Lbs from obsessively eating mainly food which should be illegal (seriously).

TRUTH:
We should at least ENJOY what we eat, ideally healthy stuff so we CONTINUE eating right.

But eating properly is getting EXPENSIVE (another DUH!)
