Where do you want the casino?

1) The Senecas know that they cannot attract tourists to Buffalo and that is why they want the Casino in the business district but that will only decapitate and impoverish the business district forcing a further exodus to the suburbs and further delaying development of the waterfront and canal district.

2) The real competitor is Niagara Falls, Ontario which is already the local leader in international tourism, gambling. Putting Buffalos casino in Niagara Falls will only improve the odds of developing Niagara Falls, New York as a competitor.

3) Buffalo competing with Niagara Falls will only allow Niagara Falls, Ontario to maintain its lead. However, if Buffalo links its downtown area with Niagara Falls by extending our light rail, then that could make Buffalo the GATEWAY to Niagara Falls while maintaining and aiding development of all our urban businesses.

4) A strong Niagara Falls can only help Buffalo since most of those people in Niagara Falls (Canada and NYS) arrive from Buffalo's Highways, Rail and Airport.

I agree with the last post. We need to develop our tourist attractions first. A casino should be an ancillary attraction, if we absolutely must have it. And I don't really think it'll work at all. But there is so much we can work on to attract tourists to Buffalo. We need to make it easier for people to get here.

Seth,

I agree with you on this one. Buffalo is full of historical value - it just isn't endorsed like it should. A casino isn't the tylenol for all headaches... and it will probably only create jobs for dishwahers and carpet-sweepers.

Unless there are drastic changes in the structure of casino operations all it will do is hurt the area. Check out my feelings and expanations on the casino issue at www.insidecheektowaga.com Thanks for stopping by.

Buffalo is full of historical buildings. Buffalo could be a cultural hub.
But there is one flaw , the buildings that are being spoke of are falling down !!! Does not anyone see this? Just last week Statler Tower was crumbling onto Delaware Ave. Get on with the NEW. Out with the old. That is why we are in this mess, too much nastailga. Grain elevators rusting, houses that may have been part of the underground railroad ( not that I am against perserving anything that can be for a nominal fee, or is a proven historical place). I am getting sick of hearing "do you know what this place used to be". My reply " No but it looks like it is going to fall on me because you did not care until the wrecking ball showed up "! Buffalo, always battling to keep things the way they are. Nothing can change around here. Until change happens no tourist is going to spend money on a tour of Buffalo's crumbling buildings and the worst gettos. Both can be safty hazzards.
