If you have taken the course before (did not get the permit)and are applying for a second time, do you need to take the course again?

If you still have the certificate, Erie County will let you turn it up to 5 years later. Niagara as far as I know has the same policy of allowing you to turn it in up to 5 years later as well. I will call them to confirm on Monday morning and get back to you.
Did you turn your certificate into them and not get it back? I know Niagara takes the original but you can request to get it back.

I believe that I never got it back. It has also been more than 5 years. So I guess that I will need the course again.

Niagara takes the original and will only give it back to you if you request it after the process is complete. I know they only take an NRA certificate from an NRA instructor who is approved by them. Generally they will then give you 5 years from completion to turn it in. If it has been longer then 5 years you will have to take a course again. Check out our schedule and see if one of the class location and dates fit your needs.
Thanks!

Niagara County will also accept certificates from On Target Tactics, LLC. We don't give out the NRA certificate because we teach more than the NRA course. Our course contains all aspects of the NRA course but has more than just home and range safety. We also discuss Article 35 NYS Penal Law, Fundamentals of Shooting, both semi auto pistol and revolver, weapons function, ammunition, weapons selection, etc. We are all NRA, DCJS & FBI, certified firearms instructors.

The Firearms Training of Western New York class covers Article 35, Fundamentals of shooting, both semi auto pistol and revolver, weapon function, ammunition, weapon selection. malfunction resolution, safe handling as any good course should. But we also provide you with the NRA Basic pistol book that is yours to take home and keep. This book covers everything that is covered in class and about 6 more hours worth of material. It cost more to us for give the students the NRA book and certificate but we feel it is well worth it. Months down the road when you go to fire your first shots, all you have to do is open your book and give yourself a refresher or just come back in and sit in on our class for free again. The book covers all of the fundamentals any shooter needs to know including step by step pictures detailing how to clean your firearm. This is why we provide students with the book to take home and the NRA certificate.

We also give the book at the class, it is well written, and a good resource for the novice shooter. I think you met two of our instructors when you were at the Utah school. I remember them talking of someone they met from the Hamburg area. We should do coffee, sounds like we have the same ideas.

That is great that you guys give the book. I feel it is a huge benefit, especially in Erie county when residents may wait 10 to 12 months before holding a pistol for the first time. I did meet two officers in Salt lake for Utah training. Good guys, would love to meet up some time.
