Should Buffalo Place take a closer look at VFW opposition and and stance that the "Thursday at the Square" concert series be moved to protect because the gatherings dishonor a war memorial at the site. Buffalo Place's response basically dismissed the local VFW Commander, Clarence E. Buob's, concerns without much thought.

Ignore it. Smart money says the outrage expressed by the two VFW "leaders" mentioned in that News article do not reflect in any way the feelings of other VFW members -- not this one anyway.

The VFW guys are brilliant. They wanted attention paid to the monument, and they got it. Every news van in the city was down there the days the story came out, and Buffalo Place had guys powerwashing the statue and tilling the soil.

The concert should stay where it is. It's practically the only time anyone even looks at the monument.

IMO- if Lafayette Square was named 'VFW Square' where only Partiotic funtions were held, then I might think differently. And if I'm not mistaken, Lafayette Square was named after General Lafayette; another war hero. 1 out of 7 days, for just a few hours through the 3 month summer when Thursday at the square is held is not that much of a 'dishonor' to a memorial that stands 24/7 365/12. What about the people who spray paint on memorials in parks and etc.? That's a dishonor.

Let me ask you this, how many people do you see at that memorial downtown when it's not Thursday, or not in the summer?

Are the concerts interfering with the efforts our history tourism committees do to attract visitors to look at the monument?

This is just another act of blind selfishness by yet, one MORE uppity attention seeker, who dismisses the fact that Thursday in The Square boosts the downtown economy on a Thursday night.
I know. I used to book bands in downtown clubs, and Thursdays in the summer is the BEST night down there, by far!!

THey should use that as a chance to educate people. There's a load of people there on thursdays, set something up for the veterans and explain the monument.

Plus I think when the City was designed to start, wasn't niagara square ment as a meeting place?

Well I've been to Thursday in the Square a few times. I do feel that it's not respectful or safe to have people climbing all over the monument itself. Police should probably just kindly advise people to not colimb on it. However, it's a perfect place for the event.

Safe? So we should ad some more laws for the people who happen to be stupid and fall?

Yeah....with people sitting on it it's harder for the pigeons to pay their respects by pooping on it.

As a combat veteran I find nothing wrong here. I suspect this VFW Commander must be running for higher office and needs a platform to help him win. I for one, have little respect for the VFW as an orgainization and will never join one.

Safe? So we should ad some more laws for the people who happen to be stupid and fall?Maybe the VFW's could benefit by selling advertising rights to local injury attorneys. :D
