To just all out boycott China, or at least goods made in China??

I mean, for real, anyone that buys anything made in a country that #1, is trying to kill our kids, and #2, practices the worst human rights abuses of any modern industrialized nation needs the teeth kicked in.

Right! I mean what was that whole silly cold war about anyways??!!

I wonder what veterans of the Vietnam and Korean wars think about us openly doing business and trade with the China and other such countries? Weren't we against communism? Why is it okay to be in bed with them now? Just to buy cheap junk? We sold our democratic soul. While we are at it why not invite Castro over for dinner at the White House.

Close down all the Wal-Marts! They support cruel communist countries to save a buck! I can't believe it when I hear Republicans support trade with China. And they call liberals communists... Jeez...

The United States is in debt to China in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Don't want to "tick off" China and have them call in their loans to us.
Thanks, George!

China has a combo of Communism with Capitalism in which private enterpise has been pushing China to become the world's #1 or #2 economic power

I refuse to believe that Mattel, Fisher Price and the rest of the U.S.-based companies
"didn't know" that there was lead paint and other dangerous toxins on their toys;I'd bet my nads that dangerous imports in our households don't just go back 2 or 3 years-
Try a decade or two of poisoned products.
Have em' tested.

It really sucks that the United States & allies saved the Chinese' asses in World War II and the U.S. supplied Mao with weaponry & training (during & post WW II I think)

Oh. Yeah.

Yesterday, I found out that most of our PRESCRIPTION DRUGS are made in China with LITTLE AND OFTEN NO QUALITY CONTROL BY THE U.S. PHARMACEUTICALS.
Yes, "legal drugs" are made in China dirt cheap yet the Pharmaceuticals charge more than millions of Americans can afford for their "magic pills & potions"

So when you read-hear stories about black market for organ transplants from Chinese prisoners, don't be surprised.

Ennit "funny" how the "best" way to make a healthy profit is to hurt, kill, or ruin people?

-Wars & war profiteers
-Defective products
-Children's toys?
-Prescription drugs riddled with side effects, over-priced like I dunno-OIL?!

Capitlism is beautiful.
But making a profit without doing harm to people is what REALLY takes "business acumen";Skill

I watch Lou Dobbs also, but I can't watch him for the full hour. I have to watch Little House (wife's show) to depress me or something else to calm me down. After about a half-hour I just want to go postal on some of these idiots (Spitzer, Bush, Liberal Dems, etc). I can't imagine what I'd feel like after a full hour.

I don't even like Wal-Mart but singling that one place out is pure hypocrisy.

If you really hate China, stop buying hardware made by Denon, Sony, Freescale (formerly Motorola) and many many others. Avoid Target too.

Add in Home Depot and Lowes. I could go on and on but you get the point.

I'm curious to see if anybody in the press has the stones to ask any democratic candidates what they're going to do about Mr. Clinton's "Most favored nation".

I am.
And we told our families that anything for our daughter that was made in China will be brought back.

I truly want a list of all the products made there, and companies that have plants/factories there and outright boycott them all.
My next Myspace page is gonna be a Boycott China page.

And the worst part is that we are part of the burgeoning economy they have, that's built on their slave labor practices, that is one day going to be the #1 economy in the world.

Just another part of the crumbling pie known as Planet Earth, aka Humanity

EXACTLY!!!!!!

The people of this country were sold out when American industries were allowed to MOVE, not expand into, but MOVE to China, so they could pay their employees $1.00 a day, and keep thiem in company controlled housing units, they they are charged to live in, and THEN they get to raise the prices, because of the import/export fees sending the stuff back to the U.S.???

What kind of flippin' madness is this???

Nobody really gets it. You dont need to boycott China

Why?

Because your dollar has just dropped nearly 50% in value on the world currency market.....that means that China and every other importing nation just had their currency appreciate 50% more or buy that many more US treasuries to keep their currency pegged to the dollar.

You dont have to boycott China or any other importing nation because very soon...all those currency manipulating nations are going to depeg their currency and US will no longer be able to afford those cheap imports.

We are trillions of dollars in debt.....because of this president and when one adds in transportation costs....it may soon be cheaper to once again manufacture in the US than to import.....of course US tax policy could bring that day alot sooner if it was reformed.

HipKat

But we both know that's not going to happen.

Tax Reform, Economy, waning American made products, devaluating dollar, housing market crash/foreclosure thing, inactiveness by the majority of the people, possibley cataclismic planetary changes......

Apples from China?? CHINA?????

WTF!!!!!?????????

Seriously, this country is a cliche of a crashing America.
It's life imitating art, as I think of every action/drama I've seen over the last 15 yrs that foretells this.

When I read that many of the ingredients used in commonly-prescribed medications in the U.S. come from unsupervised factories in China, I freaked.

I know that the poison products from Peking go way beyond toys, toothpaste and the other products our media has been "generous" enough to tell us about.

Chinese imports going back 10 or more years could have dangerous levels of toxic chemicals; Its not a "recent" phenemenom-
Its just that the "dangerous products from China" has "suddenly" made the news because too many people have discovered how dangerous most of these poorly-made products are.

And I'll reiterate:

There is absolutely NO way that Fisher Price, Mattel and the rest of the U.S. corporations who've imported Chinese goods "never knew" they were poisonous.

Bullsh-t.

Here's the U.S. corporate mindset regarding Chinese (and other nation's) imports

"Cheap to make (labor), cheap to purchase/import-cheap to sell and more profit to us and our stockholders, so the hell with quality control as long as "they" (the consumers) never find out that we've been skimping on the quality of our products using the cheapest crap possible"

Have some independent (non-govt/corporate funded) laboratories test a randomly chosen number of products from China dating back to 30 years:Products that were used and are still being used by Americans

Yes. China will "thoroughly investigate and reform" its cost-cutting manufacturing, our media will tell us, "Chinese products are safe again, buy with confidence" and we'll believe it as we have time and again; No boycotts, no protests,

Our government, corporations and media truly care about our health and welfare.
Really.

From Furious George:

"Now y'all go shopping! Stop worryin' bout Chinese food or toys or whatever the hell! And stop staring at muh big ears!!! Don't worry none that we done told you that malls are terrorist nookliar threats! Go shopping, dammit or I'll send ALL your asses to Gitmo! Heh heh heh heh heh!"

I'm not sure why you're surprised. Richard Nixon was the POTUS who normalized relations with China, and the Republicans have been kissing Chinese butts ever since. For all his tough talk about spreading "democracy" to the rest world, GWB has carefully ignored Chinese human rights violations.

Unfortunately, it's hard to avoid a lot of Chinese products. However, I never knowingly buy food products made in China. I say "knowingly" because some products made in the US or Canada may use materials made in China (that was the case with the pet food last year).

I'm also rethinking dollar stores this year. I used to grab a lot of cheap Christmas gifts there before, but now I'm not going to.

People always wanna blame Wal Mart first for the cheap Chinese stuff, but in reality the dollar stores are probably a bigger threat.

At work this week we looked up the chain stores that opened the most new locations in the year 2005. Family Dollar and Dollar General were at the top, along with of course Wal Mart.

I always get a sick feeling when I enter dollar stores... And it's not just from the reeking obnoxious odors of phthalates either... All that cheap stuff made in China, reeking of chemicals nonetheless and now knowing more truth about how and where they are made and the juxtaposition of the omnipresence of "WE ACCEPT FOOD STAMPS AND EBT CARDS!!!!!" signs now just makes me too sick... It shows on so many levels what is wrong in the world's economy... You know.

What what can you do? I think that Playmobil toys are at least made in Germany... But I think I saw a China stamp on a more recent one.

Meanwhile, I feel better letting my kids play with hand me down Fisher Price toys that were made 25 years ago... still in the US.

Products sold in the U.S. must be marked with country of origin. If it says "packaged in," "assembled in," or words such as that there is supposed to be other language which identifies the source of the materials/parts unless those materials were substantively changed in the manufacturing process. Thats the law, and part of the job of Customs.

That said, you would be surprised at the numbers of consumers who just pick stuff off the shelves without looking.

What's to be gained by blaming anybody except the Chinese who haven't "taken care of their business"? If enough people around the world stop buying products made in China, then the Chinese will learn a valuable lesson about capitalism and regulation -- and maybe Americans will, too.

HAH! The ethnic slam was classy. However, American Exceptionalism is over (many people believe it never happened in the first place). So you will not get the satisfaction of "straighten[ing] out" those "slanty eyed bastards." Besides China could care less whether we buy their crap or not. They hold enough of our debt as it is. Consumer spending, while currently the largest in the good 'ole US of A, is growing around the world and there will always be people to buy Chinese made goods.

I just realized that even in this dumb-downed country, most parents want the very best for their children and most parents are aware that most (or all) Chinese toys are toxic;Dangerous for their children.

So how will parents;Friends & other relatives of children shop for the kids this Christmas?

I don't know if this is a "petty topic," but I wonder if most parents have started purchasing the safer but more expensive toys that are NOT made in China?

Just wonder what the current toy purchasing trend is in the U.S. following the wave of recalls.

There is NO way in hell that Bush would allow a boycott of Chinese products;

We owe more money to China than any other nation.

Tens of thousands of consumer products, components and ingredients (other than toys) are made in China for American corporations who will NEVER give up such dirt cheap labor and products in exchange for consumer safety!

This is America, people!

When I read that many of the ingredients for American prescrition drugs were made in China with LITTLE OR NO OVERSIGHT-I FLIPPED!!!

Can anyone say "toys aren't the ONLY poisions imported from China?"
