So when is the Lackawanna School Trustee election? May 3-10-17?
Regardless, tick tock---who is strong enough to run the gauntlet?
OR, if only the connected " family and friends " club run candidates, then there will be no contest.
Two months and, I am not in the clique but we hear something BTW by now........ this is unusual.... ANYBODY OUT THERE?
andreahaxton
March 10th, 2011, 08:11 AM
I can't believe it....... Is this a good or bad thing?
Maybe I'll say I am going to run---then they'll scramble to get running!
Anyone out there truly on the side of OUR children/taxpayers/ and non-political school staff?

Please spell my name correctly and have you checked with the board clerk as to see who picked up petitions? Do that first so you can stop spreading more lies and misinformation.

All jobs of this nature are at the pleasure of the board. EVERYONE who gets appointed on a yearly basis KNOWS that and hey, takes a chance. I am surprised the current clerk has lasted this long. After all...
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Let's us not foget that mayoral slogan!
This arose as a quotation by John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, first Baron Acton (1834–1902). The historian and moralist, who was otherwise known simply as Lord Acton, expressed this opinion in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887. But the rest of that quotation is EQUALLY as IMPORTANT and it is:
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."
There really should be no surprises when the board exercises their right in this area. This IS a place where they have total control.

Who cares about a platform????? That is just plain silly!!!!!
What they say is NOT what will happen. I hope someone steps in that can influence the board to take fiscal responsibility for the mess they are in and will CUT jobs!
With salaries being the biggest part of the budget the $$$$$$$$$$ is taken away from the kids for staff salaries and benefits. This has to STOP! Put a freeze on hiring and make drastic cuts NOW!!!!
Who cares about sports if you can't read, write or qualify for higher learning?

************************************************** *******
how silly-----I thought fiscal responsibility was a platform....... Why I even heard the current School Board President running on and attacking the budget/spenditures. Hmmmm......
Influence the Board?---the only one that can influence the Board beside the only sincere person gearing up for a run is a: CONTROL BOARD!
Whoa on taking a crack at sports---of course classroom academics is priority but extra-curricular activities is where we achieve life-long learning/training.
We can always look up a date we forgot but good sportsmanship is never forgotten. I guess the schools cut back sports programs the years some of the "family and friends club" would have learned it......;)

When I ran for School Board, my platform was anti-bullying. You asked if having a platform and being able to express it MATTERS? I believe it does. True, voters are going to cast their vote for whomever they choose and for whatever reason motivates them. When I wrote those articles about bullying, I was directing my concerns toward bullying BY STUDENTS TOWARD OTHER STUDENTS. My platform mattered TO ME. It expressed my beliefs and my values that I stood for (and continue to STAND FOR). Sadly, during the previous campaign, the Front Page refused to publish articles written by certain candidates so the voters were not given the option to choose which candidate was best. The voters didn't even get to SEE platforms. To me, that kind of proves that expressing one's platform DOES MATTER, doesn't it? Enough to SILENCE it.

Well, given by what you just said...I would NOT have voted for you. Boards make policy - PERIOD. The staff's job is to handle behavior, discipline etc. You cannot regulate anti-bullying by simply putting something on paper and suspending a child. It goes much deeper and that is NOT the job of the BOE. Clearly you do NOT understand the ROLE of the BOE.
The BIGGEST job the BOE has as Andrea has stated, is FISCAL responsibility. Every yes vote to HIRE anyone is a board vote AGAINST being fiscally responsible. Only you can answer how many "yes" votes you gave to all hires during your three year term. That is the BOTTOM LINE for a board member. You were hired by the taxpayers to make sure their money goes to the CHILDREN!!!!!!!! Not to be concerned about anything else. Be a teacher if you want to do what your platform is.....

Literal, that is exactly what my platform was when I ran last year. The Front Page refused to print my articles and the gentleman that I supposedly was running with.....well his camp neglected speaking about me or passing my literature out when walking....that is the reason I didn't go "meet" the people within every ward. I wasn't going to bust my butt for him when his camp bypassed his partner. Simple as that!

John, I'm still not sorry I ran for School Board. Even if the "majority" of people regret voting for me...that's o.k. I ran. I won. I served my 3 year term. It's history. You can't go back and "do over" so it doesn't matter what you say about my "success" or "failure" as a School Board member...it doesn't change anything. I'm just one person. One woman. If you get some kind of pleasure laughing at me and calling me names, it's a free country...

School Board Service
What you should know about running for and serving on a school board
Have you Considered Running for the School Board
Serving on a school board can be one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences imaginable. These are challenging times for public education and our school board members have one of the most important responsibilities a citizen can have – preserving the education of our schoolchildren.
School board members have a complex and sometimes frustrating job, struggling long hours as volunteers on very complicated matters. It's also a fulfilling personal experience when students in the district succeed and lead happy, productive lives as a result of their public education.
The board of education is a uniquely American institution. It keeps the country's public schools flexible and responsive to the needs of their local communities. A member of a board of education in New York State takes on one of the most important responsibilities that can be assigned to any citizen: helping to plan the education of the state's youth.
VIDEO
What makes a good school board member?
The legal requirements for board membership are few, but qualifications for effective service are many. The most effective board members possess most or all of these attributes:
•Effective Communicator – Can describe what he or she wants and describe what others want; a good listener.
•Consensus Builder – Capable of working toward decisions that all can support and willing to compromise to achieve that goal.
•Community Participant – Enjoys meeting a variety of people, can identify the community's key communicators and reaches out to fellow citizens.
•Decision Maker – Knows his or her own as well as others' decision-making styles, can support group decision-making.
•Information Processor – Can organize priorities and schedules to handle large quantities of verbal and written information.
•Leader – Willing to take risks, be supportive of board colleagues, district staff and community.
•Team Player – Helps promote the board's vision and goals.
What does a board member do?
With children always their ultimate focus, school board members act officially only at the board table, working with other board members to accomplish the following:
•Create a shared vision.
•Set student performance standards.
•Oversee development of assessment program based on those standards.
•Account for student achievement results.
•Adopt the annual budget, aligning district resources to improve achievement.
•Create a healthy environment for work and learning.
•Build strategic partnerships.
•Sustain the district's progress through continuous improvement.
•Adopt and maintain current policies in written format.
•Hire and evaluate the superintendent.
•Ratify collective bargaining agreements.
•Maintain strong ethical standards.
How do I become a candidate?
School board members in New York State, except for those in the five largest cities—Buffalo, New York City, Rochester, Syracuse and Yonkers— receive no remuneration except the satisfaction that comes from rendering an indispensable public service.
Generally, school board candidates must be at least 18 years old, qualified voters in the school district and able to read and write. They must be residents of their districts continuously for one year (as little as 30 days or as long as three years in some city school districts) before the election. They cannot be employed by the board on which they serve nor live in the same household with a family member who is also a member of the same school board.
Local school board members in New York State are elected, except for those in New York City and Yonkers who are appointed. The method of election may vary from district to district. Check with your superintendent of schools or your district clerk to learn about the voting method in your district.
With limited exceptions, school board members serve three-, four- or five-year terms. Terms are staggered so all board positions are never open at the same time. By state law, school board and budget elections, in all districts except Albany and the Big 5, must be held on the third Tuesday in May.
Procedures for filing petitions for vacancies on a school board vary depending upon the type of school district. Generally, candidates must submit a nominating petition to the school district clerk. The petition must be signed by at least 25 qualified district voters or 2 percent of the number of those who voted in the previous annual election, whichever number is greater. In small city school districts, nominating petitions must be signed by at least 100 qualified voters. The petition must include the candidate's name and residence, the vacancy in question, the incumbent's (if any) name, the residences of the persons who signed the petition and the length of the term of office for which the candidate is being nominated. This petition must be filed with the district clerk at least 30 days (20 days in small city districts) before the election meeting, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
State law requires all candidates for election to a board of education to file a sworn statement with the district clerk disclosing their campaign contributions and expenditures.
Any candidate whose total campaign expenditures and/or contributions exceed $500 must prepare and file an itemized sworn statement with both the district clerk and the commissioner of education. For expenditures and/or contributions under $500, the candidate need only file a sworn statement (not itemized) with the district clerk.
Expenditures of not more than $25 may be made without the candidate's permission if the donor or donors file a sworn statement with the clerk and the commissioner stating that the candidate did not approve the expenditure. Details concerning these requirements may be obtained from your district clerk or from the Bureau of Finance, Management and Information Services (SMIS), New York State Education Department, Albany, N.Y. 12234.
The New York State School Boards Association
The New York State School Boards Association was founded in 1896 in Utica, N.Y., and incorporated in 1935. The Association's headquarters are in Latham.
NYSSBA coordinates activities designed to serve the interests of New York State's school boards. It provides information and advice on school board issues to its members and cooperates with other educational organizations for the welfare of public school children in the state. During the legislative session the Association advocates for adequate state support of education and enactment of legislation that favors the interests of the public schools.
NYSSBA conducts a wide-ranging program of education for school board members and administrators as well as an annual delegate assembly and convention. One of the most important Association services is its orientation academies in July and September for new school board members. Participating in one of these is perhaps the most effective way a new board member can learn about his or her job quickly.
The expenditure of public funds for the New York State School Boards Association has legal basis in section 1618 of the Education Law.
For more information about NYSSBA programs and services, contact the Association at (518) 783-0200 or via email at nyssba@nyssba.org.

Doesn't matter. Not the one making accusations. When media attacked you it was lies for political reasons. But when they attack your foe, it's the truth?Which is It H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E?

Not accusations, I speak from only the facts. The media did not come after me because witnesses saw me punch someones or scream in someone's face in public and in front of an old flame(Police Report on file:2005). Facts are facts, my life/character speaks volumes the same as his or yours does.
Who do you think called the media on me about my taxes---did they call them on the other elected official/City employees who owed? No, of course they didn't---they wanted me out of City Hall because I was finding too much corruption and they wanted the public to tar and feather me on the last train out.
Judge me--Call me a name, whatever. But I caution you to be very careful when YOU make your own accusations about me gohome!

Showing your ignorance once again. According to latest figures, school enrollment in Lackawanna increased. You've yet to print a true statement.
Burden of proof isn't on me. Not the one making accusations.
Don't you have a whole new group of people to hate in Boston? How long before they run you out of that town?

WILLIAMSVILLE SCHOOL BOARD
Candidates engage in lively debateBy Sandra Tan
NEWS STAFF REPORTER
Published:
May 6, 2011
Four of five candidates for the Williamsville School Board turned what is typically a quiet candidate forum into a lively debate Thursday night as they traded comments and criticisms of the 2011-12 budget and future budgets to come.
“What happened this year is a shot across the bow of this boat,” said James F. Waack, an Orchard Park teacher and newcomer candidate.
Michael Schmidt, who is vying for his first term on the board, was toughest on the other candidates, launching attacks about board decision- making that occasionally drew gasps from the audience in the district offices board room.
When incumbent Stephen C. Munschauer said he thought the district followed a good budget process this year, Schmidt responded, “It was a good process that you followed this year?”
“Very,” Munschauer answered.
“Taxes were increased. Classes were cut. Educators lost their job,” Schmidt said. “That is not a good process. Committee involvement was not heard. The board leaders did not listen to our community. Many intelligent people came to speak in front of this board, and the board leaders turned a deaf ear to them. This was a failed process this year.”
Schmidt, a risk analyst manager for HSBC, and Patricia M. Losito, a nursing program director for Erie Community College, positioned themselves as challengers with young children in the district who want to see big changes and new leadership during tough fiscal times.
Munschauer, Waack and incumbent Ronald S. Shubert, who was away on business Thursday, are running as a slate, promoting their experience in education as crucial to board stability.
“I agree this election can be seen as a referendum on School Board leadership,” Waack said. “A vote for Munschauer, Shubert and myself is a vote to continue the direction of the board. But let’s be clear where that direction has taken us. It has resulted in the Williamsville School District being the No. 1 school district in Western New York seven consecutive years.”
Both Losito and Schmidt advocated program restorations and were critical of 2011-12 cuts.
Munschauer and Waack said their goal will always be to restore, maintain and build district programs but also said they are faced with a difficult reality because of state cuts. Waack pointed out that he will no longer be teaching gifted and talented students in Orchard Park next year because the program was just cut.
“There’s no more gifted and talented program, and that’s a disservice to children,” he said. “You want that restored? You better believe it. What is the reality of where we are? We’re someplace else, and it’s awful.”
