3500 to the NYSP alone. Wow. That is a big expense to the taxpayers of NYS. Sixty thousand take home cars. Amazing.

Zowie that is a lot of maintenance cost... Tires, insurance and replacements when needed...

Another perk we can't afford.

The state self insures its vehicles, so there are no insurance cost, but the taxpayer is 100% liable for any misuse or negligence on the art f the driver of one of these cars.

We'd be way better off reimbursing mileage than providing a take home car.

We'd be way better off if NY government just decided to pack up and leave.

You're right. Police should use their own cars.

I'm innocently asking...Why do the NYSP take home vehicles always seem to be those kick-ass Yukons (or are they tahoes)?

There are two different troopers with-in a mile or so of my house (my walking and bike route) that each have the take home SUV. I'm assuming those guys are part of a specialized unit and not simply road patrol, but still, that seems like a nice perk...

You bet, between the lease, gas and insurance it's gotta be $750 a month... They should be taxed on it!

Okay, suppose we take a typical lease vehicle. 3 yrs. Something like a Malibu (about $20K) is almost $400 / mo. What maintenance is there on the vehicle, it's typically warranteed for 3 yrs. If there's an accident I suppose that could be costly. Tires are most likely not a 3yr wear item, perhaps one change of brakes. I don't know if they cover the cost of gas. If so, at 15K miles per year, about 20 mpg, that's 750 gallons / yr or about $200 month. So now the cost is about $600 / month. I suppose that makes a pretty big difference.

Now I'm not advocating for take home vehicles, but that's about $400M. Now most of that money helps prop up auto manufacturers. The rest goes to support oil companies. So suppose different states have varying degrees of support for auto manuf. It probably is in the billions for state owned vehicles...not a bad business to be in, yet somehow they still screw it up.

Of course that's some business...feed at the government contract trough and yet claim taxes are too high...unreal.
