Lancaster New Yorks - mysterious disappearing cemetery ??????????
What has happened to one of Lancaster's oldest cemetery ?
Next time your site seeing or just cruising down Pleasantview Drive , Lancaster , New York - East of Harris Hill Rd. Near the Ecology & Environment Facility - just before the entrance to the New Subdivision.
If it's still there , look on the south side of the road - but hurry - look close - it seems to be disappearing from view.
:D

Who is supposed to be taking care of this area? Is there a developer hoping to put something where the cementary used to be?

Towns are required, by law, to maintain abandoned cemeteries. I don't know anything about this one, or if it falls into that category.

As you can see in picture #3 - The Town of Lancaster is responsible for the care and maintenance of this Cemetery.
There is a new subdivision going in around and behind it , Pleasant Meadows.
Its just sort of fading away. The Grave stones have been disappearing and no one seems to care to even cut the grass.
Maybe they figure if it was too visible - it might scare away interested home buyers ? I don't think I would like to find out after I purchased a new home - that a grave yard was in or near my yard !
""

I was just listening to something on PBS about old areas like that. It's against the law in a lot of states and counties to remove those items.

Well another miracle brought about by "Public discussion/INTERNET posting."
It seems soon after the "Disappearing Cemetery" on Pleasantview Dr. in Lancaster was discussed on SUWNY - A miracle happened !
The grass and some brush were cut down and behold even most of the tombstones seem to have reappeared ! Although it is far from what a "Historical Site" should be - at least it reappeared!
So it would seem from comments at a recent Town Board Meeting (among the "Inner circle") and the fact that Elections are quickly approaching - someone whispered in the right ear.
This only goes to show - "They are watching and reading" so please join in - lets remind them of "Promises made - work that needs attention and if you see Governmental waste or possibly something that just isn't right -
Post it here and we can all see the results !
:)

There are a lot watching and reading. Far more than people realize.

The grass is nicely cut right now. And they do cut it "semi" regularly. I agree though, they really need to cut it weekly - a historical site shouldn't be overgrown.

"Semi" what?
That area hasn't been "Care for or maintained" since they started that development. The only time it was even cared for was when some Town Residents complained. The Current Town Board members made a grand stand show of saying, "The developer will maintain and improve that "Historical Site."
The only thing that has been done to "Care for or protect" that site is what was recently done- sense it was brought to light on this web site .
Its a embarrassment to the families who have people buried there and This Town Government (That is supposed to by Law , care for that site).
I'm quite sure if it wasn't mentioned here - they would have let it disappear - wouldn't want to scare any potential buyers now would we !
Another reason they took action is they would have had to prosecute the Developer for what he did and failed to do - we wouldn't want to aggravate the Developers/Contributors now would we !

SO go take some photo's of the place so there's documentation of what is there. This way when it is slowly disappearing you have record to nail thier arses :)
