Has anyone seen the A&E show Matchmaker? It was filmed in Buffalo and talks about people from the Buffalo area. I guess it premiered over the weekend some time.

I heard about it on the radio this morning. They said the one guy was a barber on Main Street in Williamsville. Does anyone know anyone who appears on the show? Hopefully the show casts Buffalo in a favorable light!

My wife and I watched it. Spent a lot of time rolling on the floor laughing. We both decided to keep watching to see if we can spot someone we know on the show.

After watching another few in this series... should this topic really be posted under Positive Points of Western NY?

I caught some of this local dating show and was taken aback at the 42-year-old virgin who was reamed by the lady that runs this dating service,
"a 42-year-old virgin is not cute! Never mention this on a date!"

I felt sorry for the poor guy!

Then there was the witch that brough a "checklist" to a date at a resturant and wondered WHY her date began flirting with the waitress and was ignoring her!

This is one reality show that is INTELLIGENTLY realistic, humiliating its participants just enough to attract repeated viewers and the "meeting new people" and "will they find love" angles don't hurt either!

Hate to say it, but this show is a refreshing view of Buffalo (and dating games) and should run for several seasons!

There are plenty of single people in Buffalo that the show could last for decades! I think I recognize someone in the intro that is on the website but I can't quite place his name.

Apples,

Hahaha - I saw it too. It was pretty funny. I didn't know he worked for Senator Rath. I am pretty sure he does (at least now) work for Jim Domagalski.

As someone who used to live in Buffalo it appears that this show is all about type casting.

I am sure this lady has lots of clients on her books but it appears that A&E is only showing the "gems" of the group. While to some in the area this show may be funny, think about the negative impact that this show has.

Just as people think most in LA are strange, the nation is going to think Buffalo is made up of people like this featured on the show.

I know plenty of well rounded, attractive and smart singles in WNY. Heck, WNY has some of the best looking and down to earth women in the US.

Just be careful as all press is not good press, with this being an example.

Do you really think there are that many people outside of Buffalo who actually watch this show? And for those who do not understand that they aren't going to choose the "normal" people and instead cast the "whackos" then they obviously dont have a clue.

No one is going to think, "Well I was going to travel or move to Buffalo, but that show on A&E changed my mind."

Actually yes a lot of people from outside of Buffalo are watching. Do you really think a large cable company would run a show just for the TV audience in Buffalo?

In regards to the use of "normal" people.... Perception is reality. Buffalo should already know this. How many people do you know that pack up and move south or west based on the perception of those places? Hell, I did both and the perception was one of the major reasons I did.

What Buffalo needs to do is bring in young people. Unfortunately, young people watch shows like this. As of right now, this is the ONLY national exposure to Buffalo.

Showing blistering cold nights does not help. Showing every person with the Buffalo "twang" that makes one sound less educated does not help. Showing empty restaurants on a Friday night does not help.

Sure this show is a guilty pleasure. As was Baywatch and Dynasty. But those shows left a little bit of a different perception of LA and Dallas in the 80's and 90's.

Just my opinion.

Thank gawd you said it first. The "Gems" will reflect to a nation what people from WNY are like.

First of all, Baywatch and Dynasty were not "reality" shows. They were scripted tv shows. That is comparing apples and oranges.

Secondly, I am a young person from Buffalo. I have never watched an episode, I just saw a teaser for it. If people move to places based on their perception from a reality tv show, then shame on them. You should study an area, perhaps even visit it before up and moving.

How many times has The Real World been on MTV? A good 20 times or so. There have been many negative scenes about cities where the cast has lived. Many of the characters themselves have done bad things have are perceived to be "bad" people on tv. I am sure most of these places and people are nice. And honestly I could not tell you a cast members name or something that looked bad in a city from a past series.

I think you are making this into a bigger deal. People see things and forget them. No one is going to think of moving here in the future and say to themselves, "Oh man, remember that A&E show based in Buffalo? It was so embarassing, I am going to have to cancel my move there."

I mean sseriously. If an A&E show can sway you that much then you are probably easily swayed by mainstream media and the government.

Good Point on casting but those shows sold the area. This show is selling Buffalo.

I am not talking about young people in Buffalo, I am talking about people OUTSIDE of Buffalo. I am not saying people will move or not move to Buffalo because of this show. What I am saying is this show will leave an impression, no matter how small. The fact that this show is so bad and is the ONLY thing giving Buffalo national exposure is my position.

Real World brings in people from outside of the city the show is taped in. Face it, this show is portrayed at 100% Buffalo and the perception sucks. There is a lot to love about Buffalo and WNY. My point is this show is doing damage.

I think you are making this into a bigger deal. People see things and forget them. No one is going to think of moving here in the future and say to themselves, "Oh man, remember that A&E show based in Buffalo? It was so embarrassing, I am going to have to cancel my move there."

I am in marketing. People do not see things and forget them. People see things and then pay attention to something else. Over time we build a cumulative knowledge and perception. This show is essentially a commercial on replay with a bad message.
It is not that people are going to cancel a move to Buffalo. But when a 20 something starts to make a list of where to look for jobs out of school, Buffalo will not even start on that list.
Ask any group of college students where they would want to live and start a career. Most will list the big areas like NYC, San Fran, LA, San Diego, DC, Dallas. When in fact the BEST places to start a career is NOT in these areas but in places like Buffalo. Make no mistake, people in the US do not think. They react to what they are told and shown.

I mean seriously. If an A&E show can sway you that much then you are probably easily swayed by mainstream media and the government.

I am not swayed but most of the US is. This is my point.

Nothing scares a guy away like a girl having more than one cat... She IS a cat lady.

I caught this one last night... kinda liked the guys face when she said she was a liberal democrat.. too funny. Then she says, hey, you watch fox a lot? Talk about stiff, that guy makes Gore look like a pimp.:D Actually, I thought that maybe he posts here.

The show did offer a couple LOL moments though..

I heard that the matchmaker chick (Novak) was trying to "out" people before the show started in an attempt to find good story lines. She'd say, "I think you might be gay, have you considered that?" I've heard from separate sources now (not just from the hetero male who does my hair) that she offended quite a few.

"Not that there's anything wrong with that!"
