Business First produces weekly population projections for states, metros, micros, counties, towns, cities and villages. Results are published in the Numbers section of each week’s print edition.

Projected populations are generated by a computer formula that Business First developed in 2000. The formula uses a decade of U.S. Census Bureau (http://buffalo.bizjournals.com/buffalo/related_content.html?topic=US%20Census%20Bureau) data to extrapolate growth trends.

The two-county Buffalo-Niagara metro is 50th in the new estimates, with an estimated population of 1,119,909.

Other rankings of interest in Western New York include Rochester in 52nd place, Jamestown-Dunkirk-Fredonia in 308th, Olean in 453rd and Batavia in 555th.
