Strong demand for the recent “Beat the Fee Increase” passport-application initiative has prompted Erie County Clerk Kathleen C. Hochul to open a permanent passport office adjacent to the Northtown Plaza Auto Bureau in Amherst.
Hochul marked the opening of the passport office during a news conference Tuesday at Northtown Plaza.
Hochul said she opted for the permanent facility “after receiving countless requests” for a permanent passport presence on the heels of “Beat the Fee Increase,” which saved an estimated 2,500 people more than $85,000 before passport fees increased July 13.
The new office is “extremely convenient for our customers at no additional cost to county taxpayers,” she said.
Hochul said the passport office is next to the auto bureau. Hours are 10 a. m. to 3 p. m. Monday through Friday.
The passport office will handle passport applications and photos. Hochul said prospective customers have to bring birth certificates with the official seal — not hospital- issued birth certificates — and a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or school ID.
