So, who's assessment went up?
Mine went up about $28,000 dollars more since my our last assessment a few years ago..
Luckily we just has the house appraised and it seems the company the town used is over $37,000 more than what Hunt says the value is.
A nice way to get more money out of the community without "raising" taxes while we have benderson getting discounts for spec buildings.

mine went up last year about 20,000, which raised my mortgage payment up over $100 a month, a payment taht started at 786 in 2001 and is now over 1,100 a month in less than 6 years. Have to love this town. I live in the dick, george urban area.

I guess living in Cedargrove has its advantages. I didn't get an assessment letter.

Mine actually went down. Which is weird since homes are selling for more than ever around here. I'm not complaining though.

Maybe they did a cost analysis and realized it wasn't worth the postage. :)

The assessor is trying to raise mine $160,000! That's almost 60%!
"...property values have increased dramatically in the Akron-Newstead area over the last three years (since last assessment in 2004)..."
Yeah, right!

Actually, housing prices are dropping according to the News. Further, I couldn't get for my house what they say I can.
My taxes went down too, but not as much as they raised my assessment, $15,000 last year! Big whoop! they decreased it by $2,000.
I smell incumbents trying to get re-elected. If they really wanted my vote, they should have, at least, gave me half back of what they raised it too just one year ago. This is just a "See, we actually gave back to the taxpayers." ploy. I'm not feeling it.
And while I'm on this ...
Shouldn't we get a refund of this year's tax that they "overcharged" for?

yes, a few years ago... we fought it and had it lowered somewhat..
We just had a real appraisal done and it was a lot lower than the new town assessment. I wonder who they are using as an assessment company. I didn't know you can get assessed every few years..

Thats my whole point in this. $5000-$6000 to live in your town.. ...
There are people that have been in cheektowaga for 35 or more years.... how do you even plan retirement or anything never knowing even the rate of your tax increase year after year

Housing prices may be dropping, but houses in my neighborhood are selling for $30,000 more than what we paid for ours when we bought. Two houses just sold and I couldn't believe both the asking and selling price.

Heard first hand from a few different home sellers prices seem to be dropping over all. Yes there are pockets of homes doing well but on average homes are not selling like hot cakes. Abnormally high property taxes make people think before purchasing. Plus seeing there is no limit on "government" spending you can easily see your home taxes doubling or more over 10 or so years.

I'm sure I can get $30,000 more than I paid for my house but not the $50,000 they say I'll get, oh, wait ... $48,000.

That's why reassessments are called a "stealth tax."

We held taxes down this year! We made up out spending increases quietly by making assessments higher!

What I don't understand is why official type people keep telling us our values are up, up, up. I mean, really, it's not like we're living in Atlanta, or L.A. or some other hot real estate market!

They love to lie. Remember it's really not illegal to lie so it's ok in most of thier books.
If they keep saying values are going up they probally believe people think they are doing a good job.

Wait till they tell us that the property tax rate went down too while our tax bills go up 1000 bucks.
I am curious to see just how much more tax money the town takes in this year, seeing as how apparently they reassessed the most expensive area of town - losson/como.
I am more curious to see what they do with that money.

To the many homeowners in Town who received reassessments.During the past year I recorded sales of homes in Town and checked out there assessments at time of sale, many where well under the 65% the Town say's is used to get there assessments,I contacted the O.R.P.S.office of reality,Western Reg.Dir. Joe Muscarella located in Batavia and sent him my finding he told me he has been telling the Town to reassess all homes at 100% and the state would give them $50 for each property to cover there costs.By doing this every one would be assessed fairly, but the Town refuses to do it.By doing it the way they are they can raise assessments on a number of homes every year and cover there massive budget increases without asking for large percentage increases.Meanwhile homeowners get large tax increases and they cover theirselves. We need to challenge the way they do things. When you contest your increase make it known many homes are not assessed at 65% and that it is discriminatory. The homes I recorded I checked out with the new assessments just out out of 60-70 none reached the 65% level, some remained the same and some went done. Example home sold for$122,000 assessed at $48,100.
