Go out and get whatever has the highest concentration of DEET in it. Be careful though, I think it melts plastic and causes cancer.

Well I'm not plastic. but the cancer factor needs to be considered :)

We are nearing the end of the black fly season. DEET does not work on black flies. Flame throwers don't work black flies. Staying covered and indoors is the only way to avoid black flies during black fly season.

If you don't like the smell, put orange peels in it and let it sit over night.

Are black fly's the same as horse fly's. We've got them really bad this year. Just small ones now, but growing. The ones with green on their backs that suck the blood.

What are deer flies then? I remember fishing one year and they would bite right threw your clothes. Or are they all the same... black flies, deer flies, horse flies etc...?

Deer Flys are nasty. They are the fly's with the strip on their wings. Leave a nasty welt when they bite and it itches for days. They are the one's that seem not to give up when you swing at then, they come back for more....lol

They are in Losson Park now, little bas....... Some years worse than others.

AND does anyone here burn with wood?

I'm in the process of cutting up stuff that fell during the October storm. I don't know what is hardwood versus non-burnable stuff. I'm just piling it up. If someone would be interested in taking it pm me.

Horse flies are gigantic. biting flies have mouthparts like scissors that slash the skin the tongue licks it up, mosquitos insert their "needle" and suck like a straw.

That's why flies hurt so much, well for most people.

This is what I have. I've been calling them horse fly's forever because that is what everyone else calls them. These things get huge too! Still small now. I've got a roll-on for the alpaca's and it works, plus I put a powder on the dung pile to kill the eggs and it works for them. But they are always getting me even with Off with Deet.

A black fly is a small biting insect - looks almost like a small ant with wings.

They are well known by anyone who spends time in the outdoors in May through June in the the Northern United States and Canada.

In the wetter parts of the northern latitudes of North America, including parts of Canada, New England, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, black fly populations swell from late April to July, becoming a nuisance to humans engaging in common outdoor activitites such as gardening, boating, camping, and backpacking.

There are several "black fly" Balls and festivals in Late May and early June in the Adirondacks because they greatly interfere with outdoor activities in the the North Country.

People who are unfamiliar with the outdoors often attribute black fly bites to mosquitoes. Black fly bites are generally more numerous and smaller.

I stumbled on these things last year - and I won't go into the woods without it this time of year. They have one that clips on your belt and keeps the bugs from you.

Got a spot on it's eye. It was tough to focus because it was on a window that was a thermopane. Two pieces of glass between it and the lens.

We have the perfect answer to insects. Bats and I don't mean the Louisville slugger type although those would probably work too until you get tired. I've heard that the fungus that infects bats has decreased the population but it doesn't seem to have affected ours.

Honest Abe, eat match tips. Keeps the bugs/ticks away.
Nothing keeps chiggers away that I'm aware of.
