Good idea, allgirl4bd :)

re: ethics

egsiii's personal blog that he operates under the domain name "townofevans.com" is described by him as, ahem, "a cyber newspaper." Obviously his blog lacks any info to show that his site is one person's personal opinions. There's an absence of a feedback mechanism, and no means to correct errors. Putting this aside, then it appears that egsiii sees himself as a journalist.

A journalist, eh? The Society of Professional Journalists has an ethical guideline on their site (see their Code of Ethics at http://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp).

"Uhhh, then I change my mind, I'm not a journalist."

Okay -- then look here: these guidelines have been modified by The Online News Association to create a Blogger's Code of Ethics (http://www.cyberjournalist.net/news/000215.php), which are as follows. I highlighted a few to be helpful

Be Honest and Fair
Bloggers should be honest and fair in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.
Bloggers should:
• Never plagiarize.
• Identify and link to sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability.
• Make certain that Weblog entries, quotations, headlines, photos and all other content do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context.
• Never distort the content of photos without disclosing what has been changed. Image enhancement is only acceptable for for technical clarity. Label montages and photo illustrations.
• Never publish information they know is inaccurate -- and if publishing questionable information, make it clear it's in doubt.
• Distinguish between advocacy, commentary and factual information. Even advocacy writing and commentary should not misrepresent fact or context.
• Distinguish factual information and commentary from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two.

Minimize Harm
Ethical bloggers treat sources and subjects as human beings deserving of respect.
Bloggers should:
• Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by Weblog content. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.
• Be sensitive when seeking or using interviews or photographs of those affected by tragedy or grief.
• Recognize that gathering and reporting information may cause harm or discomfort. Pursuit of information is not a license for arrogance.
• Recognize that private people have a greater right to control information about themselves than do public officials and others who seek power, influence or attention. Only an overriding public need can justify intrusion into anyone's privacy.
• Show good taste. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity.
Be cautious about identifying juvenile suspects, victims of sex crimes and criminal suspects before the formal filing of charges.

Be Accountable
Bloggers should:
• Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.
• Explain each Weblog's mission and invite dialogue with the public over its content and the bloggers' conduct.
• Disclose conflicts of interest, affiliations, activities and personal agendas. • Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence content. When exceptions are made, disclose them fully to readers.
• Be wary of sources offering information for favors. When accepting such information, disclose the favors.
• Expose unethical practices of other bloggers.
• Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others.

Good luck on updating the blog to conform with the ethical duties. First stop: that misleading name.

In my opinion, No. He's a dude with an opinion and the time and motivation to start a website. He's under no obligation (ethically) to show the other side. He has an agenda, and it doesn't matter if he states it or not. The reader needs to be objective when scanning anything. Just as most people read or watch the news objectively (we can all see bias to one side or another when reading or watching).
It would be like the DNC giving the RNC's positions and counters to the DNC's claims on their website.

I do understand where you are coming from, and I do see your point. What you are asking isn't unreasonable, but I just don't agree with it.

Here’s a partial list of stories NOT reported in the crier or just one side of the story reported.

Group home for sex offenders
Junk yard on Hardpan Road (@300 cars)(Ongoing for years)
Solid waste facility on Eden Evans Center Road
Sheriff’s heliport
Rezoning of Town
Privatization of Wendt Beach.
The Evans Township Lions Club holds a Memorial Day service at the Derby Veteran’s Park.
Ever see an article or picture? No!
Lions asked for $200 for lights for the park. Catalino said town could not afford it! Read this in the crier? No!
Freeholders appeal was reported in the Buffalo News and Sun. Read about it in the crier? No!

A good example of what is on townofevans.com that isn’t ethically reported in the crier is Ed Gleason’s property that is flooded out by a neighbor. Two culverts drain water from the bowl created by the oval race track into Gleason’s property. If fact, Gleason had to correct outright lies printed in the crier. Town law protects Gleason. This is an enforcement of town law issue not a neighbor issue as claimed by DNT.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.townofevans.com/racetrack/index.htm">More Pictures – Click Here</a>

Why wasn’t this side of Gleason’s problem reported in the crier?

Why didn’t our “ethical” town board act to correct the problem?

Maybe you don’t have time for a web site, but if you have the time to post in this forum you have time to start your own blog.

Guess you misunderstood -- my post is clearly directed to the egsiii blog entitled "townofevans.com." Or maybe you'd rather change the subject than respond to straightforward questions.

Why are you bring up what some tiny newspaper -- one of several that covers the Town of Evans -- does, did, doesn't or didn't do? What does that have to do with your blog? I mean, "cyber newpaper" :D

Focus! Let's again use the example of the broken vase:

[Sound of broken vase]
Mom: Young egsiii, I saw you smash the vase onto the ground. What the....?
Young egsiii: Well, uh, you see.......Sibling broke a window last year.
Mom: Oh! End of discussion, darling!

See, life doesn't work like that.

The question remains: how does "townofevans.com" live up to the ethical duties set forth either in the Journalist's code of ethics (for a cyber newspaper) or in the Blogger Code of Ethics (for a plain old blog.) Try and focus ;)

What exactly, is his ethical duty?

Is he an elected official, or a town employee??

Two sources have outlined ethical duties:

As a journalist: the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists (http://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp).

As a Blogger: these guidelines as modified by The Online News Association (http://www.cyberjournalist.net/news/000215.php); reprinted above in the first post in this thread.

Will bet there's other sources out there -- these were just the first two that I picked up from a quick search on Google.

No, he is not but I have a sneaky suspicion that davenport is.

Is this a change of thread? ;)

Your inquiry about my job is very telling -- there's no response to the question, just an attempt to make a red herring. What difference does a poster's job make to this discussion?

Focus, my friend. Remember: "But Mom... he broke a window a year ago." In real life, Mom doesn't say "Okay darling." She stays on topic: "I don't care what Sibling did -- answer me, young man!"

Let's stay on topic. The issue is the blogger's code of ethics.

ps I am not an elected official nor a town employee anyways. Maybe you could start a new thread to outline whatintheheck difference it would make? ;)

RE: thread "blogger "townofevans.com": does he violate his ethical duty?"

Hey eveybody -- blogger "townofevans.com" has picked this up in a new thread: "Ethics and $59,000".

Don't know why -- this seemed like such a nice thread. ;)

Some would say "blogger" and "ethics" go together like Hillary and Obama.

I looked at his site and have a few observations:

1) There is a law against <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybersquatting">cyberquatting</a>, and, if the Town was really bothered by this, they should take legal action to recapture the domain name.
2) The lawsuit may be futile as there may be dozens of Evans' throughout the Country, and no one could really claim ownership of it.
3) This guy seems like he puts a lot of hard work and time into the site. Good for him, he seems like he's doing a good job.
4) He also ought to look to avoid legal hassles as I'm pretty sure <a href="http://www.townofevans.com/2007/articles/buffnews070202.htm">this type of link</a> to the Buffalo News is not legal.
5) Holy ****, Ed Gleason must be one pissed-off mother****er! :D

I looked at the link -- yep, it's an article in the Buffalo News.

Surely the blogger known as "townofevans.com" asked the Buffalo News for its permission before reproducing its content.

After all, he's not just a blogger, he's a "cyber newspaper" ;) Why, it would be professional courtesy, right? That is, if he's a journalist. [Tiresome reminder: the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists (http://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp) -- I know, I know, yawn]

How about it? Did you, egsiii? Did you? Come on!

A yes or no will do-- no speeches about a heliport, cupcake. ;)

In fact, you must include a link to the written permission slip you must have obtained from the Buffalo News, so we all can read it for ourselves.

After all, the blogger known as "townofevans.com" wouldn't do something illegal -- after raving about people committing all kinds of atrocities in this town -- why, that would be the pot calling the kettle black. [okay, that's an inside joke with egsiii -- it's my first post to him, on 3/12/07, under his thread "To DNT: Create an e-annoyance, go to jail" -- see no. 2] :)

My goodness -- this is too much fun. Enough already, it's bedtime! :D
