Anybody have any recommendations on a good place to get a couple yards of black mulch? I don't want mulch that's half full of sticks, and I don't want it to fade after four weeks. Any advice would be appreciated. I can pick it up...

One thing about mulch. I may change the acidity of your soil.

There is a local guy at William and Harlem I believe. He's been there for years. I know he has coco shell mulch and might have something dark that you'd like.

We just purchased bulk mulch from Russells.. see link
http://www.russellsny.com/

I believe my wife paid approximately $32.00 per yard.. we purchased 7.
Last year we tried dyed mulch for the first time. Color did hold true.

I buy my mulch from the town of amherst... $19.40 per cubic yard... but in reality they dont really measure it so 95% of the time I end up with 2 yards each trip...

Its 50% mulch and 50% topsoil... its actually really nice stuff...

I do this, too. I filled the back of my SUV twice last year and paid less than 20 bucks.

I'm not at all disappointed with it.

Yeah Russell's is good. Has anyone tried Adam's on Genesee? I do love the black mulch, have used it for years.

Love that Russell's. Just can't afford them.

I rely on seeds, cuttings, sales n stuff.

Thanks for the info. Apparently Russels is cheaper than Adams, which is $50/yard! I'm going to head out there and check it out...

If you have dogs, you may want to stay away from cocoa shell mulch. It has the same toxic properties to dogs as the chocolate itself does. If you plan on mulching away from the dogs frequent, you should be ok.
Town of Alden will give mulch to residents for free. It is fresh, though, and it has a tendency to have tinsil from evergreens in it. I would caution about using it in flower beds, but around trees and to fill bare areas in the lawn it is ok. Price is right. They drop it in front of your house and you move it where you want it. I have gotten it a couple of times, I just put a tarp down.

We have purchased mulch from Adams in the past but they seem to short us per yard. Ulbrich's has pretty nice stuff...
Russells seems to be most resonable and very generous. We ended up with way more than we need.

Got my three yards of black mulch yesterday from Bengert's om Old French Road and it looks pretty nice. Paid $40 yard. Time will tell if it'll fade. Now if the rain will just stop......

I'm happy with the mulch from Amherst :) I'm going to buy from them again this year. Last year I filled the back of my SUV with it.
I went there twice... 16 bucks total. (8 bucks each time)

Cheap=excellent.

Where is the Amherst site located? (I'm assuming you don't have to be an amherst resident?)

Also how did you load up your SUV? Just curious because I was thinking it would be too difficult without a pickup truck. What kind of containers do you use and how would they load it?

I'd like to buy some mulch but a little clueless how best to get it. I've bought the Scotts bags before... great product and they are really convenient to load if you just have a car, but they get very expensive.

I think you have to prove residency. though in such a case you could pull the race card and claim their being prejudice....

anyways, you can use just about anything to put the mulch into. however you get a better deal with a pick up truck.

Its located about a quarter mile north of the 990 and Millersport intersection... its on the right.

You do not have to provide proof of residency...they will sell to anyone.

They will only except a check though...no cash or credit cards......so bring your check book.

I've seen people bring garbage cans and load them up and transfer into their SUV's. Large storage containers, also bushel baskets..anything you can load mulch and compost into. I saw a guy with a station wagon loading cardboard boxes one time.

Now if you can find someone with a pick-up..they will use their front end loader and load it for you, and you always come out ahead! But otherwise you are on your own for loading, so bring containers and your shovel!

I think their compost is better than their mulch, their mulch is good, but the compost does the same thing, but also provides nutrients to the soil..... It will prevent weeds if you put on thick enough just like mulch.

I put the seats down, laid down a tarp that also wrapped up the walls, and just loaded the mulch onto the tarp.
When you think about it, an SUV has about the same amount of space in the back as a pick up truck, it's just enclosed.

As they said, if you can find a pick up, they will load it for you, but they do charge you extra for this.

Make sure you bring a shovel...they don't provide you with one. If you don't want to risk getting the mulch all over your SUV, contractor bags will work nicely. I just do the tarp and vacuum afterwards. :)

Looks like this year you can use check, debit, or credit.

You don't have to be a resident. I'm not, and they'd be dumb to do that with the amount of stuff they have their, it would just rot.

Here's the info:

They do have some good compost, too, as they stated.
