When asked about reducing the size of Depews Board ,
"Trustee Sandra Pieczynski made the proposal three years ago."
"She brought it up and two weeks later I brought it up," Trustee William M. Maryniewski said. " quoted in the Buffalo News.
Well if they truly believe it would best serve the residents , why don't Mr.Peek-aboo Maryniewski and Sandra Pieczynski resign their seats ?
Just think what a positive example they could make . They could eliminate the cost to the tax payers relating to their tax payer funded pay and tax payer funded benefits . They could both sign off on the health care , eye care , dental plan , insurance plans and the New York State Tax-payer funded Pension Credits they receive from Depew Residents !
Don't know about Sandra , but Slick Willy gets credits from two other positions he held that come with overlapping tax payer funded benefits anyway .
Show everyone how serious you guys are about reducing government.
I for one believe they won't do it . They are only on the band wagon when they feel they can dominate the Depew Government . They don't want to reduce costs to taxpayers . They want to increase their control . Then later they will vote themselves raises to compensate themselves for the " Increased work load ! "
Well , maybe i am wrong , but i believe this is just another way to ,
"Reduce competition for control l" and in no way a fiscal responsibility move. This will also cement the Joe C. Boys Club lock on another small town Governmental Facade. :p
Maybe you guys can show the Political world that you actually mean what you say . Maybe you can lead the way for all bloated Government agencies and administrations.
Just think of the major impact you guys could really make , by removing yourselves from the long list of tax eating career politicians.

Frankly, what Depew should really do, IMO, is dissolve. It serves no purpose except to eat up taxpayer dollars.

19 elected board officials on two Village Boards and one Town Board serving a total of 49,000 residents, what a joke!
Village of Depew (7 elected + 1 king {J.C.} - 17,000
Village of Lancaster (7) - 12,000
Town of Lancaster (5) - 20,000

I think Depew should defect and become their own Town. It isn't like Depew utilizes a whole lot from either Lancaster or Cheektowaga. Oooo, a library, pool and skating rink, woo-hoo!
There has to be a way. This isn't a Communist country. There are always loop holes in the United States. Where is the loop hole to get out of Lancaster and Cheektowaga? How much money will it take? How many Depew taxpayers are willing to defect?

You don't have the tax base to defect, assuming there is some way you could. Depew can barely afford its own police department........

That's not true. Otherwise they'd keep Cheektowaga to their end of the bargin. Depew pays for Cheektowaga Police services and doesn't recieve what they pay for. If you live in Depew and call the Cheektowaga Police Dept they'll tell you to call Depew. To me this is like tipping not only your waitress, but everyone elses in the restaurant.

Your tax base is shrinking and, minus some miracle, will continue to do so. But your expenses will keep increasing because no matter how many people and businesses you lose, you will still have to pay for your aging streets, pipes, government buildings, continuously increasingly police and fire safety costs and other services for seniors and young people.
You can tweak numbers here and there, raid the surplus and look for one-shot revenues for years to come, but eventually that won't compensate for your shrinking tax base.
Of course, maybe you could get a huge bunch of state aid from Albany. Just think, you too could be like Buffalo -- wards of the state!

The whole of New York State's, minus NYC, tax base is shrinking. The sooner people get this through their heads the sooner we can do something about it. Consolidation isn't necessarily the answer for everyone. It may benefit the city of Buffalo, but not too much else.

mesue - I take it that you live in Depew?
Put it this way - What additional service do you get for the extra taxes that you pay??

It would help with the resaidents of Depew if the village were dissolved and the apporpriate parts were obsorbed into Lancaster, Cheektowaga.
You are paying for suplicate services in some areas:
1. Administration and support staff, along with benefits
2. Offices for both including
3. Police and Court (I believe)
Not to name the Highway department, as the villagfe is smaller, it costs more to run, maintain equipment, less flexibility in usage.
I do not no more about Depew, except that I drive through it, and I've know people who have bought houses with the Depew zip code, and when they found out about it they were very unhappy, as they did not want a Depew mailing address. Do not know why.

PS - I do know that the village of WIlliamsville gets their side walks plowed fo them in the winter, this service is not provided by te town.

Very interesting idea
elected officials who support downsizing should be willing to prove their support by resigning, removing themselves from office, and downsizing their government
Depew's tax base is shrinking
lancaster's reval lowered the assessed value of houses in depew on the lancaster side
there's no new big businesses coming to depew
the only ones staying are used car stores and junk dealers and pawn shops
yes, depew has it's own pawn shop
our water and sewer systems are aging and the block grants we get to improve them on main st. etc seem to be really designed to improve water to the industrial waste park that used to be gould/dresser industries
the expenses for everything government continues to rise
you can bitch about raises to the police, but you've got to pay the police because their job is dangerous and getting more dangerous with the growing drug problems on main st
(i live in that neighborhood. it's pitiful. i can't afford to move and why should i. i've lived here my whole life)
i hate to admit it, but maybe it is time to dissolve depew.
its hard to change when you're old. i love depew, it used to be a great place to live. sure there were a lot of bars on main and penora when gould was going strong. but not everyone went to them. there were some great people in the neighborhood who bitched about the drunks as much as i bitch about the drugs.
but depew is broke and so are most of the people. we're old and getting older
if depew became a town, it would be one of the poorest in erie county.
maybe we should just dissolve it

Hold on ... I'm trying to think of something ...
A library which I never use, even when there was one in Depew. Wait! I take that back! I use the library in Cheektowaga when Cheektowaga raises my assessment and I have to meet with the Assessor and find out how I can sell my house for what they say it's worth without people laughing at me. We met at the Library on Borden.
A pool which I never use. Depew has one.
An ice rink, which I never use. Depew has one.
I think Cheektowaga maintains the sewer, but I'm not sure. It isn't as if I see them maintaining it. I see Depew maintaining theirs across the street in different neighborhoods over the 9 years we've owned our home. I'll find this out in the Spring. My sewer needs maintainence.
Other than those things, I can't think of anything.

I think it's because the $250,000 homes were built in Lancaster (pronounced, in a snooty yuppie voice "Laun-causter" then say "Dauh-ling" as if you were speaking to Muffy and Bif) behind Tops on Transit and French.
I like that my sidewalks are plowed most of the time. Not all of the time, but most of the time. It makes me feel like my Villiage officials care enough about me to plow the sidewalks, especially after a big snow.

I don't think it would make sense to dissolve and become part of Buffalo. Cheektowaga and Lancaster would be more like it.

MESUE- the sewer Dept in the Village is excellent. Call them and they are there. What do we get from Cheektowaga-nothing! I'll continue to pay Village taxes to recieve good service. Streets are plowed/salted. Police are there quickly, if you need them. DPW is excellent.

I grew up on Wyandotte Street and that street hasn't seen a sidewalk plow since 1974.
My father sold the house at a loss 2 years ago, at a loss, to get out of there. I'll pass your words onto him when I visit him this weekend.

I pay Depew Village tax, Lancaster school tax and Cheektowaga town tax. I think, but I'm not sure, my sewers are supposed to be maintained by Cheektowaga. We replaced a pipe in the lawn and I think it was the Cheektowaga inspector that came to look. I was in the hospital at the time.
Depew gets very good service for their tax dollar.
We're already a part of Lancaster and Cheektowaga. I don't want to dissolve any further, I want to defect.
