I wanted to start up a mini veggie garden this spring. My mother and I were talking about this and she thinks it's a bad idea because I might attract rats. She said there are rats all over South Buffalo and you have to be careful doing vegatables.
Would planting veggies possible attract rats?

I do a garden every year. I don't see nibble marks from rats, and I'm in the city.
But, doing a garden does attract wild life. But, it can be mitigated with things like fencing around the plot, etc.
But, as for attracting the rats, I don't see a problem :D
/me is a proud owner of 10 ratties :)

Your compost heap is more likely to attract them then the growing veggies. Just keep the compost covered and you should be fine.
