I was recently out to White Tail Scents in Angola getting some fresh scent for hunting. I was talking to an individual who told me he is a professional trapper for nuisance animals and has contracts with most of the townships in the southtowns. He also told me that he picks up dead deer off the road for the Town of Hamburg and gets paid $80 a deer to dispose of it from the town. Does anyone know if this is true? Does the town pay someone other than the dog catcher guy to dispose of dead aimals? If so, then why? Aren't we paying a full time paycheck to Mr. Jones to do just this? I don't know if he was telling me the truth, so please reply.

I believe Mr. Jones is a "dog" catcher not a "deer" catcher. That is probably why they may be paying someone else to do this job.

Do you know if they are or not?

All depends. I now the dog catcher handles only dog issues and very rarely anything else. I was in a car when a friend hit a deer on rt 20 one night and was told if we did not want to take it the state would come get it because it was their road.

OK, So does anyone else out there know for sure if the town animal control guy (dog catcher) picks up dead deer and disposes of them. Or is this sent to someone else to take care of?

He does not pick up dead deer. State, county or contractor depending on location.

I submitted a freedom of info request today for info on how the town gets rid of dead deer. I asked for the name of the subcontractor and how much the town pays him.

I'm sure that in 8-12 months that Freedom of Information Act request will be reviewed. It will then be forwarded to the local municipality for review and disclosure. Then, after a 6-8 month "response window" your answer will be mailed.

You should know by late 2008 or so!

The foil info is in. Hamburg pays John Stanley to pick up the dead deer in Hamburg. In 2002 he picked up 11 deer for $825.00, or $75.00 per deer. In 2003 he picked up 17 deer for $1,275.00, or $75.00 per deer. In 2004 he picked up 11 deer for $825.00, or $75.00 per deer. In 2005 he picked up 6 deer for $450.00, or $75.00 per deer. In 2006 he picked up 5 deer so far for $400.00, or $80.00 per deer. So for the last 5 years he has made $3775.00 to pick up 50 deer. Hamburg paid Mr. Jones $45,074.00 before overtime to do what? I'm sure part of his job description is to pick up and dispose of dead animals. Why are we paying this guy when he isn't doing a complete job. I say get rid of Jones today!!!

If Jones goes who will take care of the dogs that are found? They go to a vet for processing. Who will capture these animals and provide shelter for them?

OK, so what do you say to changing the title of his job from dog contol officer to animal control officer. Then we can save the 3 grand we paid to have the deer picked up. I still think he does little or nothing and the job should be cut.

In other Towns and Villages, the Highway Departtment gets the calls for a deer in the road and they send out guys from their depart. to pick itup. If it's after hours or on weekends, the cops will try to move the deer to the side of the road until monday when Highway comes in.

I believe two guys from highway would get called out at 4 hours ot pay each to pick up a dead deer. $85 is a bargain.
Problems arise with the actual disposal of the carcass. To pay a Town employee to pick up and dispose of the body during a work day may be more than $85. Trapper John is self employed with very little to no overhead, insurance, retirement and health care costs. Sometimes contracting out services make sense. AJ deals with dog complaints and violations of the Town's dog control laws. Only he is empowered by the Town to enforce these laws. He does get called out after hours to deal with dog issues. I'm sure it costs the Town more than $85 each time he comes out considering he probably has min. overtime he earns per call out.

Good points, but I don't think picking up a dead deer is a reason to be called out for overtime. As someone said before the cops can pull it to the side of the road and then it can be picked up during working hours. Also the deer are sent to the dump. There is no reason why they can't be sent there once a week. I'm sure trapper john does't run out to Holland each time he has to pick up a deer. He probably has a locked dumpster to hold them in for a few days. The town could do the same thing or maybe even have the garbage companies take them with the trash.

Tony, you should worry about your own town. You need to do a lot more work there since you couldn't get your daughter elected even with a major party endorsement. You have nothing in Hamburg so stay out!!

I'd bet you wouldn't be quite so willing to wait a week for someone to dispose of the deer carcass rotting in the sun next to your mailbox.

How often do deer get hit in the summer in Hamburg? I bet very few if any. Most deer get wacked during the rut(mating season) when they are running around like crazy. Besides if the town utilizes the garbage disposal company than the deer would be removed almost immediatly.

It only takes one in the right location (ie, in front of your house).

That's true, but I would rather have a stinky deer out front for a day or two than have my taxes go up as they continue to do.

Linda.... I sympathize with you, I feel the same way no matter what time of the year. I did notice, by the way , we call him TIN MAN like in OZ (ford Beckwith) he tried to impress you by saying RUT that is the breading season for deer. But I must also agree with the a Tin Man (ford beckwith) in front of his house or his dads were they pump raw sewage into the road they wouldnt notice the smell of a rotting carcass.
