Assemblyman David Townsend (R,WF-Sylvan Beach) today blasted a corrupt Albany leadership – Governor David Paterson, Assembly Speaker Shelly Silver, and Senate Majority Leader John Sampson – for what he called "a budget gimmick masquerading as leadership." The deficit-reduction plan introduced by these three New York City liberals included cuts to higher education, over $32 million slashed from scheduled payments to cities and municipalities, and almost nothing to deal with the long-term structural problems of the Empire State’s shaky finances.
"This was not a deficit plan; this was a travesty of good government for the people of New York State," said Townsend. "The Democrats' bill introduced to the Assembly was printed at 3 a.m. and voted on by 6 a.m. The irresponsible behavior exhibited by the New York City leadership in the state legislature has tarnished this process from start to finish, extending deliberations through four weeks. Their accounting tricks and political theater will do nothing to fix our long-term financial instability and put New York back on the right track. We still face a dire fiscal situation ahead, despite the passage of today’s so-called 'plan'; unfortunately, Albany's corrupt leadership is unprepared and out-of-touch."
