You Better Leave Town

Rumor and innuendo are painful and hard to deal with. They are also a part of life. It doesn’t matter whether you dig ditches, are a white-collar worker, or a politician. From the time you start school, to the time they wheel your corpse out of the old folks home, you are vulnerable to them. It doesn’t matter how nice a person you are. You will be the object of rumor and innuendo.

If you want to be a politician, you’d better develop rhino skin. Your exposure to rumor and innuendo will increase exponentially.

On November 4, 2009, Lee Chowaniec published a curious article regarding Lancaster Supervisor’s comments on rumor and innuendo.

What’s curious to me is: as a person involved in politics, I usually hear all the rumors as they circulate. Most of the rumors nagging Lancaster’s Supervisor never reached my ears. Most of them were not circulated in my circle of acquaintances. Most of them were not circulated on Speakupwny, Facebook, the Buffalo News, the Source, or the Bee.

In my OPINION, some of them aren’t even rumors.

As I understand it, the rumors are:

1. The Supervisor is for expansion of the Lancaster Airport.

2. The Supervisor is getting a summer home because he supports Airport expansion.

3. Before every election, the Supervisor personally hands out paychecks to Town Employees so they know where they come from.

4. The Town Board is not going to let the Office of Emergency Management use the vacant, former Depew Library building.

5. The Town isn’t doing anything about infrastructure improvements.

6. The athletic fields and band shell will cost taxpayers a lot of money.

(Suspend credulity for a moment. This piece is about rumors and innuendo, not credibility.)

The Supervisor went on to say, “If I ever find out anyone ever started a rumor about me, you better leave town.”

With all due respect, that’s a bit much. It’s more like the dialogue written for a Soprano’s character, than a public comment made by a Town Supervisor.

Yes, it takes rhino skin to deal with the rumors endured by politicians.

It takes equally thick rhino skin to deal with the convoluted distortions politicians pass on as fact.

~

Image the following scenario.

Suppose I was to say, “Indirectly, the band shell will cost taxpayers $50 million, minus a $125,000 donation, in lost property tax revenue granted to a multinational Private Equity group in IDA tax breaks. Money other taxpayers will have to make up for in increased taxes. Lancaster’s Supervisor publicly stated the donation for the band shell was part of a deal to grant the Private Equity group an IDA exemption and thanks to the donation, the band shell will be built.”

Would I be spreading rumor or innuendo, about the Supervisor?

If so, should I think about leaving Town to avoid the ramifications of a threat the Supervisor made?

If so, is he going to sic his goon squad on me or have me whacked? *

Probably not, even though it’s rumor and innuendo, right?

~

*Disclaimer. To the best of my knowledge, the Supervisor doesn’t have a goon squad, will not have me wacked, or drive me out of town. That’s just another case of rumor and innuendo, right?
