Lancaster Town Supervisor on rumors and innuendos

At Monday evening’s Lancaster Town Board work session, Supervisor Robert Giza brought to the attention of the board members and a few attendees the anger felt concerning the salacious rumors and innuendos appearing on the Internet, in the media and passed about in public.

So that nothing will be lost in the translation, the following is taken directly from an audio tape.

Supervisor Giza comments

Rumors are flying and I’m getting sick of it. There are a lot of distortions on the Internet and Bob MacPeak (OEM) came in today with a rumor (on the Depew Library)… The latest rumor is that I’m for the airport (Buffalo-Lancaster expansion). I’m not for or against the airport. The airport has been there for 40-50 years. The rumor is I’m getting a summer home because I support the airport. If you can find it somewhere, let me know where it exists. I do not own a summer home, nor did I ever own a summer home. Where these rumors start is beyond me.

The other thing is that before every election, I and the Supervisor before me are accused of personally delivering each check to town employees so that they know where their money is coming from. It never happened. What happens is that we generate the checks in my office. Departments send individuals down and pick up all the checks for the people in that department. The person that picks up the checks signs a piece of paper saying they picked them up. I have not ever given out a packet of checks to anyone. Where these rumors start is beyond me. It’s on the Internet; it’s in the papers sometimes. We really work hard. I see what you guys (board members) do and I know what you guys do and to have this crap on the streets, it really, really angers me.”

Now Bob MacPeak (OEM) came in today and the latest rumor is that we are not going to let the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) go into the library (vacant Depew library). Where did you hear that from Bob? MacPeak answered, “They say it’s not a done deal.” Giza asked, “Who said that, Bob? It’s a five done deal (all board members approved the OEM move to the library). MacPeak answered that it came to him from someone (unintelligible). "That’s what gets me",said Giza, "there are all these rumors and innuendo flying around and people do not know what they are talking about."

The athletic fields. If we get lucky, the athletic fields will cost us hardly any money, if not zero. The deal I’m working on will get us 137 acres and millions of dollars to out the fields in. The band shell, done for almost nothing. If we have to pay it will only be around $40,000; for a $300,000 band shelter. I don’t know what people want. We are putting in water lines at a cost of $7 million because some places were experiencing water pressure issues and there were some breaks in the line; and they are saying the infrastructure is letting go.

Councilman Ronald Ruffino interjected that he has been on the board for eight years and it has been no different over the years. “Remember when the clocks were brought in, it was the same thing. People were even saying there were overtime charges and there weren’t”

Supervisor Giza continues: No one wants to run for public office because you have jerks out there lying about something. It just irks me when you know you are working as hard as you can and you take these shots continuously. I am tired of it and if I ever find out the origin of it, which these are sleaze-bags because they deliver things in the middle of the night, innuendos with could be, maybes. They don’t have guts because they wouldn’t have the guts to come and say something is not true; and that we’re not responsive. I talked to a guy that was going to commit suicide. I settled his problem in a couple of hours. He needed a water line fixed in front of his house. I had the knowledge to know where to get the help for the guy in a couple of hours and two days later he had a brand new water line in front of his house. The lady with the bus problem on Nichter Road, I settled her problem. I’m the Supervisor and I could have told her to call the bus garage, but I know everyone and worked with them to take care of the problem.

If I ever find out anyone ever started a rumor about me, you better leave town. People don’t have the nerve or the guts. They go on the Internet, put things out while using code names; everybody knows who they are. They spend hours on the Internet just generating this crap out.

Later on Supervisor Giza states again: There are a bunch of sleazes out there. They are polluting the airwaves. If we were slouches, I’d say we deserve everything we get. But we don’t deserve everything we get and I’m getting tired of it. The Depew Library, I didn’t close it up, the county did. We tried to keep it up. Same way with the police station; people think we don’t want to do the police station. When I do the police station, it’s going to raise taxes. You show me a person who you elect that will do the police station that won’t raise taxes. It can’t be done. When it goes up, they will be blaming us for raising taxes. I better not find out about anyone that generated news about me. I can take a joke, but I do not own a summer home. They sit around a table and say,” let’s say the most outrageous thing, stupidest things we can think of. Do they think the people in the community are that dumb to believe this stuff? And to be part of this sleaze-bag operation, I can’t believe it.

Writer comment

As someone who attends all town board meetings, reads the newspapers and what’s on the Internet (Speakupwny anyway), there are rumors mentioned by Supervisor Giza that I was not aware of – like the summer home rumor.

What I did find interesting was when the Lancaster Source reporter asked Supervisor Giza why the town board members did not respond publically. “If you want to send a letter to the Source to respond to set the record straight, to say something like “I read some rumors on line, whatever, that you own a summer home and the fact is that you don’t.” After some murmuring took place on whether that route was advisable, the Source reporter added, “Just want to make it know that that avenue is open to you. People who send in letters to us with their signed names get them published (after the Source calls for verification).”

That same offer was made to all the candidates running for Lancaster offices earlier in the year by Speakupwny.
